A millionaire who sold “miracle” medicines built his own fountain of youth on an island off Palm Beach. 🌴 James Munyon made his fortune selling bottled cures for just about everything. His biggest seller? Paw-Paw Elixir — fermented papaya juice mixed with sulphur water. In 1901, he bought a 15-acre island near Palm Beach. Two years later, he opened the Hotel Hygeia and began promoting the island’s very own “fountain of youth” to wealthy guests. There was just one problem… The water wasn’t coming from the island. It was brought over from the mainland. The hotel eventually closed in 1917. Today, Munyon Island is mostly quiet mangroves you can kayak through. No hotel. No fountain. Just a name on the map — and a bizarre piece of Palm Beach history hiding in plain sight. 📍 Munyon Island, John D. MacArthur Beach State Park 🌴 New Palm Beach history every Sunday. Would you have paid to drink from the “fountain of youth”? 👇

This is the story of Henry Flagler — the man who helped turn Palm Beach into one of America’s most famous winter destinations. A founder of Standard Oil and one of the wealthiest men in America, Flagler came to Florida in the late 1800s and saw potential where others saw a remote stretch of sand. He built the railroad, massive hotels like the Royal Poinciana, and eventually Whitehall, his 75-room mansion. His vision helped attract some of the wealthiest families in America to Palm Beach — and changed the island forever. Much of what Flagler built is gone today, but his influence is still everywhere. Whitehall still stands, The Breakers still welcomes guests, and Palm Beach remains a destination for America's wealthiest families more than 130 years later. 🌴 New Palm Beach history every Sunday. This is the story of Addison Mizner — the architect who helped define the look of South Florida. He never went to architecture school, yet his Spanish-Mediterranean style helped shape the look of Palm Beach and Boca Raton. From the Everglades Club to grand estates for some of America’s wealthiest families, Mizner’s influence is still visible throughout South Florida today. But perhaps the strangest part of his story was his closest companion: Johnnie Brown, his pet spider monkey who became a fixture of Palm Beach high society. When Johnnie died, Mizner buried him at Via Mizner in Palm Beach. Nearly 100 years later, his grave is still there and can be visited today. 📍 Johnnie Brown’s Grave — Via Mizner, Palm Beach, FL 🌴 New Palm Beach history every Sunday. Jupiter had its own Tarzan. Trapper Nelson wrestled alligators, built a zoo out of raw wilderness, and turned himself into a legend along the Loxahatchee River. Then he was found dead — and to this day, nobody agrees on what really happened. The zoo is long gone, so no, you can't catch one of Trapper's famous gator shows. But his cabin and the remains of his camp are still standing at the Trapper Nelson Interpretive Site inside Jonathan Dickinson State Park — reachable only by boat. Some Old Florida stories sound too strange to be true. This is one of them. 🌴 Palm Beach history every Sunday. Next week: the architect who helped shape South Florida.

A Vanderbilt couldn’t get to his own beach… so he built a town. Harold Stirling Vanderbilt turned a beachfront dispute into Manalapan — and even became its first mayor. Today, Manalapan is one of the most exclusive and expensive towns in America. What Palm Beach history should I cover next? The story of Singer Island — and the resort that never was. In the 1920s, Paris Singer looked at an empty stretch of sand off Palm Beach and saw the next Monaco. He built a bridge to it. He drew up plans for two enormous hotels connected by a 36-hole golf course. Then a hurricane, a crash, and the Great Depression buried the whole dream in concrete. But before it all fell apart, he'd already changed Palm Beach forever. Together with architect Addison Mizner, he built the Everglades Club, Worth Avenue, and the pink-and-tile Mediterranean look that still defines the island today. His resort never came to be. His influence is everywhere. New Palm Beach County history every Sunday. Next week — the Vanderbilt who built one of the most exclusive towns in America.

Meet Harry DuBois — one of the most interesting men to ever call Jupiter home. 🍍 He rescued shipwreck survivors off the Jupiter Inlet, kept 600 beehives, farmed pineapples along the Loxahatchee, and in 1898 built his family home right on top of an ancient Jeaga shell mound — a house that still stands today as the second-oldest surviving home in all of Palm Beach County. One Jupiter man really did do it all. 📍 DuBois Park — Jupiter, Florida Follow for more Palm Beach County history — new videos every Sunday. 🌴
