“I believe deeply that no one should write in isolation,” Joyce Chen told @artisttrust in 2024. For more than a decade, she has been building a place where writers don’t have to.

@seventhwavemag began in 2015, “unformed and in earnest,” as a conversation between @jchenchen and three classmates. Today she is its executive director and editor-in-chief. That conversation has become a magazine, community anthologies, residencies and these One-Time Talks, made with and for writers and artists from backgrounds the literary world has long overlooked. Seventh Wave has made room for me since 2020.

This November, @redhenpress publishes UNCERTAIN GIRLS IN UNCERTAIN TIMES, which Joyce edited with Donna Wolf for young women stepping into adulthood. Each of its forty contributors writes from a poem that has mattered in their life. Threaded through the book, a mother and her daughter talk across a year. E. J. Koh writes that it “dares to hold the face of this country.”

As a girl, I was taught to fear my own story. As a woman, I know better. DESIRE LINES goes back through the women who came before me, from Cuba to Spain, as I try to become a mother unlike the ones I have known. Both books ask what passes between generations of women, and what we choose to carry forward.

Hi fwrens! I wrote this piece on my gender and wanted to share… low key it was like compelled out of me or something. I’m not a writer by any means, but I think watching @yuqil write opened up a new medium for me. The few folks I shared it with individually encouraged me to share with the public (eep!) so take a read if you’re open to it.

While you’re getting to it (link in b1o) check out @yuqil ‘s piece on @seventhwavemag (link also in b!o). I got this psychic reading done once by someone who I have never met before and she was like “your sibling needs to write more. This person has so much power in their writing” and they were referring to Yuqi so lol GO READ PACIFIC HOMING!!!!!!

The second of our featured readers for August 15th is Naomi Day! We are elated for Naomi to join us and wish for you all to share in her brilliance.

Naomi Day (she/her) is an interdisciplinary storyteller and educator. She writes speculative fiction to examine the politics of the Black body, constructs of social monstrosity, and generational trauma as inheritance, and has published her short fiction and essays in various places. She believes art making is world making and orients herself accordingly. In her various other lives, she is or was a film photographer, an engineer, and an earth worker.

Sometimes goodness comes in waves.

136 weeks, over two and a half years ago, I dreamed of successes with my writing, but could never have imagined this.

It took nudges from many people, but these past several months I finally started sending out excerpts and stories (just drafts). I'm so fortunate to have been supported and encouraged every step of the way.

Some of the highlights:

My first acceptance on Submittable, I've had such a wonderful and affirming online residency with @seventhwavemag, with my endlessly inspiring Monday cohort.

I actually got into a Creative Writing MFA!! This upcoming fall I will be pursuing a Fiction MFA at the University of Houston.

And this summer, I will be at the @mccormack_writing_center Oregon Summer Workshop under Dure Aziz Amna.

So incredibly honored and excited for this #mwcsummer

Wow, I need to write.

Deadline: April 10, 2026

Seventh Wave is seeking applications for its 2026 cohort of editors-in-chief. Four individuals will be selected to curate and publish a "Community Anthology," which is a digital anthology that publishes 6-8 writers or artists.

EICs are required to attend monthly meetings, each of which focuses on one of the five phases of the work: call curation, submission/selection, editing, staging, and publication. They will also receive a $1,000 stipend for curating their issue.
