On the first Monday of every month at 12:00 PM, the civil alarm sounds in the Netherlands. At that exact moment, an exhibition opens with a unique 1-minute and 26-second performance. Alarm is a duo exhibition in Severine Amsing’s studio.

On September 7, 2026, Severine and I created a performance centered around the theme of Textiles and Paper—specifically, the reuse of worn-out clothing and repurposed discarded books, in this case from the library of the Textile Museum in Tilburg.

The portrait we used during the performance is a copy of the cover of a small 1957 booklet titled: ‘Een nuttig man’ (A “Useful Man,”) written by Twente journalist Adriaan Buter. It tells the story of English textile pioneer Thomas Ainsworth (1795–1841). We sewed a copy of the cover into my traditional Bavarian wool *Trachten* vest, the one I’ve outgrown and that has moth holes.

Ainsworth is regarded as one of the founders of the Twente textile industry, which he helped develop from 1830 onward—for example, by establishing weaving schools where weavers learned the latest techniques. His status as a founder might be somewhat exaggerated, as Ainsworth actually prioritized craftsmanship over mechanization and had more technical than business insight. Yet, he was the right man in the right place.

He died young in 1841, and in gratitude for his contributions, a magnificent tomb was erected in the village of Goor, bearing the inscription: “Een “nuttig man”.

Every first Monday of the month, artist and weaver Severine Amsing hosts a duo exhibition at her studio in Amsterdam.

At exactly noon, when the nationwide civil defense alarm sounds, a new exhibition opens—marked by a unique performance lasting exactly 1 minute and 26 seconds.

On June 1st, I had the pleasure of being part of Alarm with a DIY session inspired by a remarkable collection of books from the library of the @textielmuseum in Tilburg.

When the museum cleared out its library, Severine returned to her studio with a meter’s worth of books: brochures, encyclopedias, technical manuals, factory catalogues, and other publications related to textiles. In this eclectic collection, she recognized the intersection of her two fields of study: historical geography and textiles.

Together, we came up with the idea of transforming these books into a unique artist’s book.

We invited our guests to browse through the collection and select eight pages each. The pages were photocopied in black and white onto A4 paper and sewn together by machine. The resulting 14 signatures were brought together into one artist’s book, bound with needle and thread.

For the cover, Severine wrapped yellow thread around a piece of A4 cardboard and secured it with staples—a simple gesture that beautifully echoes the process behind the book.

Today, September 7, during Alarm # September, we officially presented the book with a reading.

You can browse the book digitally on our website. And if you’d like to hold it in your hands and see it in person, you’re warmly invited to join us at a future Alarm.

closing thought for Witte Ruis, Lotte van Gelder

and now on this slight return.. a blue moon calls in the wolves, shining from day to night to yet another day.. frozen in plastic they are still the most luminous beings, as they sing back to the overtones of the sirens that blare across another First Monday. What inner chains are binding you? Can our song and trance activate movements within you .. we run on facing backwards and lift some veils of the every day to the beat of thousand drums HOWL .. allowing for you to shift and loosen that tight frame you still hold on to… HOWL HOWL .. let the salt water accross your cheeks, and dissolve…

thank you to: @yipinprogress , @nisala.info for being sounding companions, to @adameastlondon for co-conspiring this art making life and kitchery, to @louisavergozisi for her dancing eye, to @jim.vanhekke to bring instruments and a steady pace, to the angry geese, the raven and the newborn blackbirds in their architectural nest, the linear jive of tram 14 and to all the guests and the gifts and poetic responses they brought - to @alexanderkade64 for support and @sutomesen for generously hosting and solving details, and to @severineamsing for walking shoulder to shoulder through gestures of violence and creation. And of course to that underground creature, underwater murmur, always singing the song of my heart, who is somewhere digging at a mountain with a spoon.. awaiting the next call, my ears are already pointed

Movement 1 the wolves are sleeping

Als je me niet roept, dan blijf ik slapen..

If you don’t call for me, I will just be sleeping

Two screens connect attentions between @severineamsing and @30m3___ where the wolves are sleeping still - you can find them there day and night through the coming weeks -

On Monday April 6 Severine will perform her monthly action Alarm with a performance and exhibition that weaves her landscape skirts with the presence of the wolves - between 12 and 2 pm Borneostraat 90d Amsterdam - this moment is also the prelude to several stages of Soft Monument Witte Ruis that I develop at the residency 30m3__ of @sutomesen

Relational story 1. In August 2014 @mamelgares and me went to meet the three arctic wolves that lived enclosed in the zoo. And as the sirens of first Monday of the month were going off, we listened, recorded and contemplated the ready made quality of this performance of howling and the cruelty of this man-made setting - these contemplations now begin to land in concrete form. It takes the time it takes, and 12 years fulfills a spiral.

I trace some memory lines in Amsterdam Oost during my residency @30m3___ As a child I would follow my mothers footsteps here, midwife with a practice in the area - as she was running errands and visiting pregnant folk - through the squatted post industrial buildings in the Docklands, the brick houses of Czaar Peter buurt, by the market and Javastraat, I would be bored and daydream while waiting for her in the car during check-ins with new borns - weaving frayed dreams that still speak to me during this time of developing a new soft monument Witte Ruis and give my movements in the area a sense of intimate knowing. Similar intimacies and frayed landscapes are found in the weaving of @severineamsing who has her storefront just 7 minutes walking from here and whose magical skirts will feature in the performance of May 4. With thanks to @sutomesen for holding space for all of this.
