This weekend I had the honor of attending the 30th Annual Art Gala hosted by KNBA, Alaska’s Native radio station and a vital part of public media in our state. KNBA’s work goes far beyond broadcasting: they preserve culture, elevate Native voices, support local artists, and keep communities informed through programming that reflects the people of Alaska. Events like the Art Gala help make that possible, raising critical funds to keep independent, community-focused media strong. This year’s gala surpassed its $230,000 fundraising goal, an incredible show of support for public media and the arts!!! Supporting organizations like KNBA aligns closely with the values of the Miss America Opportunity: service, scholarship, communication, and community impact. Access to education, culture, and trusted information helps strengthen communities, and public media plays an important role in that work. A very special thank you to Thea Lawton for inviting me to be part of the evening, and to Jana for guiding me through the event and sharing the stories behind the artwork. In collaboration with the talented designers @sew_sanatu @alishasilverstein, I was honored to wear this look to a fashion gala in Los Angeles. To feature my mother’s exquisite work in the headdress and dress collar along with the leather ‘whale tail’ work by Alisha I am truly grateful to you both. 🖤🤍 . . . my mothers words ~As an Artist I like to take the old and give it new life, some I add my own design or make my own design by prayer and ponder till I see the vision, and thank the Lord. Different cultures or places I visit, I like to use whatever materials they use. I like to design my own and be a inspiration, I like to share my work with other artists some like to replicate it and it’s okay with me, we just keep the culture going and I love teaching the younger generation to pass it on. ~ Nina Headdress is made with polar bear, black dyed beaver, dyed salmon skin and dentalium shells 📷 creative sparks

“I could explain how, what and why each part of the fish is carved, cutting fish is like an art” ~ Teresa . . . I was hired to do props for a brand called @bespokepost @lineoftrade Every opportunity to work back home now that I live in Los Angeles is one that I look forward to. When the project called for dried salmon(last minute addition)as part of the photo shoot, I called my mom @sew_sanatu while boarding the plane and she immediately helped make this happen in less than 24 hours. Thank you to my family and Teresa for dropping everything and preparing this salmon. To honor our land and sustenance is very important for me in my work as I make a living collaborating with commercial brands(and playing make believe). Any way I can bring quality over quantity and cultural representation is important. Thank you @jpdalit for supporting our culture story! Thank you @tara_deal17 @tinychasm @sckimball_ for helping source props. Thank you Stacy @kanehousefilms for bringing me on the project 🤍
