POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Last week, Asian American/Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities heard directly from Minnesota Gubernatorial candidates at the “Our Stories, Our State” nonpartisan forum at the Wellstone Center, where they shared their plans to address AAPI-specific issues.

Senator Amy Klobuchar (DFL Party) and Steven Young (Green Party) took the stage individually to address the crowd. Speaker Lisa Demuth (Republican Party) was also invited, and organizers made the effort to accommodate the schedules and needs of each candidate.

The forum was hosted by seven Minnesotan organizations serving AAPI populations: CAPI, Future of Us, HAP, MN8, SEAFN, SEWA-AIFW, and Transforming Generations.

Join Future of Us and AAPI partners for a Minnesota Governor Candidate Forum on October 7 from 5:30–7:30 p.m. at the Wellstone Center.

The governor holds Minnesota’s highest state office and plays an important role in decisions affecting our families, schools, businesses, and communities. This forum is an opportunity to hear directly from candidates about issues affecting AAPI Minnesotans and to make sure the candidates hear directly from our communities.

Join Milkweed for an author and artist talk with Sangamithra Iyer, author of GOVERNING BODIES, joined by local writers Nigar Alam & Sruthi Narayanan.

A CLMP Firecracker Award Winner, Iyer is a civil engineer, animal rights activist, and the child of immigrants from India. GOVERNING BODIES is a beautifully rendered debut memoir of family, legacy, conservation, the natural world—and those who inhabit it.

We're pleased to partner with SEWA-AIFW on this event.

SEWA-AIFW means “to serve” in Hindi, and is a nonprofit that directly serves the unmet needs of South Asian communities in the Twin Cities and the refugee community in Minnesota.

👑Countdown to the Crown👸🏻
Favorite #guestappearance

One of my favorite appearances as Mrs. Minnesota International was celebrating Diwali with our local community last fall. I was proud to serve as a co-organizer alongside the incredible team at the Edina Asian American Alliance.

More than 1,000 people gathered at Nolan Mains in 50th & France to celebrate one of the world’s most joyful festivals.

Growing up in Canada and now calling Minnesota home, it’s always meaningful to celebrate the traditions that shaped me while sharing them with others.

Diwali is a celebration of light, hope and new beginnings. Those values resonate deeply with my platform, Never Too Late. It’s never too late to embrace who you are. It’s never too late to celebrate your culture. And it’s never too late to let your light shine.

I’m so grateful for the opportunity to represent Minnesota while honoring my Indian heritage. Here’s to many more moments of connection, community and celebration.

This post is also dedicated to one of our fellow co-organizers, Raja Chinnakotla, who tragically passed away last month at just 20 years old. Raja loved our city, our community and our culture, and his passion for bringing people together touched so many lives. His family and friends have established the Raja Chinnakotla Memorial Fund. All funds raised will help ensure that no student in Edina is left behind. If you’d like to honor Raja’s legacy, you can learn more here: https://give.edinaedfund.org/RajaChinnakotla. The link is also in my bio.
