Very excited to share the expansion of our IRONWORK collection! In collaboration with @sewloud these designs are based off real pieces of 19th Century jewelry. Instead of Berlin Iron, Vulcanite, Jet, and Gutta Percha, we are using 3D printed resin. This preserves all of the beautiful detail of the antiques in an affordable, durable, and lightweight material. These pieces are joining the rest of the collection now!

So excited to share these new items from my collaboration with @sewloud 🖤. These are all based off extant historical designs and they are just so delightful. Never thought I could love a snake so much! We call him Nigel 🐍

Getting closer! Today I cut bias strips and started binding the raw edges. For the top edge, I did the first pass by machine, then finished the inside by hand. I bound the bottom edge and those blasted tabs all by hand. I have the bottom edge of the second side still to do, then it just needs the lining sewn in.

Lots of progress today! Eyelets are finished, and all of the boning was measured, cut, edges rounded and sanded, and slotted into place. Once that was completed, I sewed the shoulder straps. So we’re down to four individual pieces-the two body pieces and the two lining pieces.

Tomorrow I start binding the raw edges. Yikes.

I got tired of hand sewing straight lines, so today I gave in and headed to the machine. Boning channels for the back and side back pieces are done, and the two sides have been assembled! We’re down to six pieces remaining (the two sides, two lining sides, and the two straps). I’m halfway done with the eyelets (which ARE being done by hand); tomorrow I’ll finish those and start cutting boning.

I love starting with a big pile of fabric pieces and see it diminish as things get assembled. Last night I had 28 pieces, today I have 12! The lining is together, ready to be set in much later. I basted the silk and coutil layers together. Now I need to decide and draw the boning channels and start hand sewing those. We’ll see how long I last with that!

Next up is new stays, just in time for @sewloud ‘s #summerstayalong challenge! Since I’m doing a presentation over the 4th of July where I begin in my shift and stays and show each layer as I get dressed (hence the wrapper gown so I’m not running around unclothed beforehand!), I took a hard look at my existing 18th century stays that I made ten years ago. They do the job, but have never quite fit me properly. I needed to take in the waist a little and let out the bust significantly, so that it meets at the center front lacing, and has a two inch gap at the back lacing. Yesterday I put them on and marked the amounts I wanted to adjust, and today I’ve been puzzling over how to make it work. This will be only the second pair of stays I’ve ever made, so I’m still learning!

I do want these to be a little more historical looking, so I’m considering sewing the boning channels by hand, and using 1/4” boning rather than 1/2”. I also plan to sew in the lining in a way that it can be removed and replaced when it gets gross, without affecting the eyelets. I think I’m happy with this, but I’ll do a mockup with these adjustments to be sure.

Wish me luck!

Thinking back on this very fun photoshoot day when @marisataylorphotography (aka @loveshutterbug ) captured the lovely @sewloud @thejennylafleur and @scificheergirl for some promo material for my business. We had so much fun that day and picture 2 shows how frequently everyone burst into laughter. One of my favorite days ever!

Always love unwrapping an order from @virgilsfinegoods ...it's so pretty! What's the plan? You'll have to wait for @sewloud 's Georgian picnic (rescheduled for May 23rd) to find out! 😉
.
(Or, you know, maybe not. Stay tuned to see if I finish it!)

Thanks to a great many creators I follow, I was introduced to @milanoteapp and I am mighty grateful! I FINALLY started playing with the app as I realized that I have too many moving parts for the wardrobe I wish to build by October 3 for the @costumersofcolor Global Salon. To say I am excited about 1) this event and 2) this project tracker is an understatement. The organizer in my Type C brain is soooo satisfied. Just look at those usable links. The LISTS. The color coordination!

Please note that there are some significant creators [educators] in my links. My mom taught me the foundations of how to sew, but these creators are the meat and potatoes, if you will, of my current skill. (Sorry if I miss a tag to get you your credit where it’s due.) If you find yourself wishing to learn, I highly encourage you to check them out. They aren’t even all of my favorites, btw; these are only the ones I’m jumping off with on this historical year and only at this early stage in my project organization.

And don’t think I’ve left my dry-erase board of tracking behind!! There are so many moving parts here that I need MORE organization. That white board will still be highly useful in day-to-day organization.

Also…I have 11 projects and growing to complete in 5 months. With 2 birthdays in there. HOWEVER, I am not spiraling because I was able to break down the most important projects into a doable timeframe. Can she do it all?? We shall see. #thesewingsiren #18thcenturyfashion #rococofashion #vintagestylenotvintagevalues
