This is exactly the conversation Africa’s built environment needs.

A beautiful example from Abidjan of what happens when architects and homeowners design for our climate—open spaces, cross-ventilation and a strong connection between indoors and outdoors.

At @kuulbreezeafrica , we believe natural ventilation should be considered from the earliest design stage, not treated as an afterthought. The objective is not necessarily to eliminate air-conditioning entirely, but to design buildings that depend on it far less.

Congratulations to the architects and homeowner for demonstrating that African buildings can be contemporary, comfortable and truly responsive to where they stand.

This is how we make African buildings breathe better.

Africa imports its buildings. This one didn’t.

70% of the African building stock that will exist in 2040 hasn’t been built yet. We are deciding right now whether it comes with a power bill attached most of it drawn as sealed glass and concrete for a European climate, then cooled by a machine on a grid that doesn’t hold.

Issa Diabaté built the opposite in Abidjan. Open plan, cross-ventilation, patios, rooms that open straight outside. No sealed glass. No AC.

THE OPPORTUNITY: only about 15% of the 3.5 billion people living in hot regions own an air conditioner, and 80% of the world’s cooling demand growth to 2050 lands in countries like ours. Every building that needs AC also needs a generator, a fuel line and a repair contract for thirty years. Every building that doesn’t is cheaper to run and easier to rent. Passive-design consultancy, shading and ventilation retrofits, local materials supply, and developers who price operating cost instead of build cost that’s the business. It starts with a certification and one client, not capital.

Africa isn’t short of buildings. It’s short of buildings designed for where they stand.

What is your building costing you just to stay cool?

50 years in assinie. Today, he’s built one of Côte d’Ivoire’s most talked-about hotels for his wife, Mrs. Akoula.

Estimated at $2.5–5M, every piece of art comes from his foundation, École du Beau, training young Ivorian artists and craftsmen. The furniture is handmade and for sale. Veuve Clicquot and Moët & Chandon come to sit at his table.

This isn’t imported luxury. It’s African wealth, African art, African hands built and staying on the continent.

when value stays home, it multiplies.

What can African architecture teach us about building for our climate?

Architect Issa Diabaté’s home in Assinie is designed around one simple principle: working with nature, not against it.

From bamboo walls that create privacy and structure circulation, to an open layout that encourages natural airflow, and a ventilated roof that helps reduce indoor heat the house shows how local materials and climate-conscious design can shape modern African homes.

Even the furniture reflects this approach, with locally sourced pieces and designs made to be simple, replicable and affordable.

The lesson? Modern African architecture doesn’t have to copy what works elsewhere. It can be designed around our climate, our materials and our way of living.

What do you think should more African homes be designed this way?
