🪓 HISTORIC HEAT CHECK: Thomas Walkup (2016)

In March 2016, Bob Huggins’ West Virginia Mountaineers were terrorizing college basketball.

Known across the country as “Press Virginia,” their relentless full-court trap didn’t just force turnovers, it broke team chemistry and suffocated point guards. Entering the Round of 64 as a #3 seed, West Virginia was widely expected to roll over #14 Stephen F. Austin.

Enter Thomas Walkup.

Unflappable, rocked with a legendary beard, and fresh off winning back-to-back Southland Player of the Year awards, Walkup treated the most feared defense in the nation like a warm-up drill.

Every time Press Virginia sent two defenders to trap him, Walkup didn’t panic. He sliced right through the double-team, found the open man, or absorbed contact and marched straight to the free-throw line.

The stat line was pure poetry:
📊 33 Points
📊 9 Rebounds
📊 4 Assists & 4 Steals
📊 19-of-20 from the Free Throw Line

Walkup either scored or created over half of SFA’s points. Every time West Virginia threatened to momentum-shift with a run, Walkup sank cold-blooded free throw after cold-blooded free throw to kill the noise.

They controlled the game from start to finish, blowing out a title contender 70-56.

In just 40 minutes, Thomas Walkup went from a mid-major leader to an all-time March Madness cult hero.

Help us wish Robert a happy birthday! 🎂

Robert celebrated another trip around the sun on Sunday, and we figured that was a good excuse to look back at some of the moments from this past year.

From busy days at Concenture to everything we've been up to outside the office, there's been plenty to celebrate.

Hope it's another great year ahead! 🎉
