Calling on every type of Mariah Carey fan (aka “Lambs”) to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Mariah Carey’s immensely under-appreciated debut feature GLiTTER (2001) presented from a 35mm archival print on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 8:00pm (Doors at 7:00pm)

“Get Off the Internet” Film Festival presents GLiTTER (2001) in 35mm (which is not available on any streaming service.) Widely dismissed and utterly scapegoated, it is time to re-evaluate this rags-to-riches, semi-autobiographical spectacle. MOViES FOR MANiACS has searched high and low (for more than two decades) to track down this original 35mm widescreen print (courtesy of Walt Disney’s archive.)

Preceded by a gaggle of Mariah music as well as some priceless raffle prizes, bring your entire family to the very first Bay Area theatrical screening since its ill-timed release on September 21, 2001. Directed by Vondie Curtis Hall. Running Time: 104 minutes. Rated PG-13 (for some sensuality, language and brief violence.)

So proud to have served on a jury for an award I had a hand in creating! Since 2020, the San Francisco Bay Area Film Critics Circle has been invited to present a First Feature award as part of the biggest LGBTQ film fest in the world: Frameline. For the first time, we wound up with a tie! Both are so deserving as the jury singled out.
Here's our official jury statement courtesy of yours truly and read by the extra-cool Allegra Madsen on Saturday night.: "Two films impressed the SFBAFCC jury so much that we’re honoring both this year. Adrian Chiarella’s intense directorial debut floored the jury not only because of how confident and accomplished it was for a first feature, but how it complexly explored issues pertaining to internal and external homophobia through the guise of a horror film. Sam McConnell's gritty sports-themed drama “Test” knocked us all out not only by its endearing, volcanic star-making turn from screenwriter Brock Yurich but for how it never once hit an inauthentic note in a searing portrayal of a closeted amateur bodybuilder trying to make his own mark and find connection with another man in the process. Congrats to both."
Seek these films out!

Immensely grateful to every single person who sold out The Castro Theatre to celebrate the legendary Walter Murch and his directorial debut RETURN TO OZ (1985). It was also the 25th Anniversary of my Bay Area film series MOViES FOR MANiACS which showcases underrated, overlooked and misunderstood cinema in a neo-sincere manner. Thank you to everyone who has supported the series through all the “ups, downs and all arounds” for the past quarter of century. Keep your eyes glued for more once-in-a-lifetime screenings in the near future! #MOViESFORMANiACS #CastroTheatre #SFBAFCC #ReturnToOz

“MOViES FOR MANiACS is thrilled to return to The Castro on THU APRiL 9, 2026 with an extremely rare archival 35mm screening of Walt Disney’s underrated cult classic RETURN TO OZ (1985). This special event will celebrate the film’s 40th Anniversary alongside the writer/director Walter Murch”” who will be IN-PERSON to discuss the film and his illustrious career in a post-screening Q&A, hosted by curator Jesse Hawthorne Ficks. ADV TiX ARE GOiNG FAST at www.thecastro.com

RETURN TO OZ (1985) is adapted from L. Frank Baum’s turn-of-the-century follow-up novels “”The Land of Oz”” and “”Ozma of Oz””. Led by an incredible performance by a 10-year-old Fairuza Balk (THE CRAFT), brace yourself for a profoundly mesmerizing journey as Dorothy and her new batch of eccentric friends (Tik-Tok, Billina, The Gump and Jack Pumpkinhead) take on all the wonders of Oz, including a Nome King, a haunting headless witch and a gaggle of unsettling Wheelers. It’s time to re-evaluate this misunderstood masterpiece that showcases Oscar nominated Special Effects by The Jim Henson Company and stop-motion-animation by Will Vinton studios

*NOTE: Special Guest Walter Murch will be available before the screening (schedule permitting) to sign his latest book, “”Suddenly Something Clicked: The Languages of Film Editing and Sound Design””.

WALTER MURCH
Walter Murch is an Academy Award winning sound designer and film editor, who worked his Oscar magic on Francis Ford Coppola’s THE GODFATHER trilogy, THE CONVERSATiON (1974) and APOCALYPSE NOW (1979), as well as George Lucas’ AMERiCAN GRAFFiTi (1973) and Anthony Mingella’s THE ENGLiSH PATiENT (1996), which won him two Oscars: one for Film Editing and one for Sound Mixing.”
