📖 Society of Bookbinders conference
📐 Magnetic closures for boxes

I was honoured to be invited to York last weekend as one of the speakers for the @sobbookbinders conference! I shared everything I know about magnets and how they can be integrated into boxes. I was nervous right up until it started, then I was just enjoying sharing about a topic I love!

Thank you so much for having me! Many of us bookbinders work on our own, so it's special to be able to get together with fellow book lovers for a weekend. I'm back home now feeling very inspired by the other talks, bouyed by spending time with lots of amazing binders and seeing old friends and new.

The talk wasn't recorded but in the next few days in share the nesting box prototypes that I made to demonstrate the different approaches

Thanks to @hewits.leather and @suzanneschmollgruber for these snaps!

Community members had a golden opportunity this past weekend to participate in a two-day workshop on the Fundamentals of Blind and Gold Tooling taught by Sam Feinstein @sfbookbinding

The process involved using heated brass tools to stamp into leather plaquettes, then working the gold leaf into the impression to create designs in real gold on the leather.

Follow us and sign up for our newsletter to get the latest on our community workshops! Visit our links in bio for information on upcoming workshops and scholarships to take these workshops for free if you are a student or educator.

In this two-day class, students learn the fundamentals of blind tool and gold tooling on leather, focusing on straight lines and using shellac glaire to affix the gold. Line-work is one of the most important, fundamental, and versatile decorative techniques used on tooled bindings, and is used in both traditional and contemporary designs. Students also have time to explore the use of decorative tools within a limited scope. Each participant leaves with a final plaquette using the techniques covered.

Samuel Feinstein began bookbinding after a traumatic brain injury left him with constant pain and unable to continue his other pursuits. While the pain remains, he found that binding books by hand was a possibility for him. He trained at the North Bennet Street School in the two-year full-time bookmaking program under Jeff Altepeter, full-time instructor, and Martha Kearsley, part-time instructor. He strives to make his dedication and passion evident in his work, with a particular focus on craftsmanship. He currently lives and works in Chicago Illinois.

A week after I've returned from seeing my binding for OPEN SET in San Francisco and I'm just about over the jetlag. What a super trip, my heart is full and my nose is freckly

Bookbinders are just a super bunch - I was so far from home and travelled alone, but felt welcome and part of the gang the whole time. It was so inspiring to see such incredible books from around the world with my own eyes, and to finally meet so many binders who's work I've long admired online.

Big thanks to @americanacademyofbookbinding and @sanfranciscocenterforthebook for hosting us all, and for the huge efforts of all the organisers and judges! The exhibition is on show at The Bookbinders Museum and San Francisco Centre for the Book, before heading off to Denver.
