Mayor Lurie is wrong on Prop I. You should vote YES.

Voters passed Prop I in 2020 to fund affordable housing. City Hall swept the money into the General Fund for three years, then tried to cut the tax in half in the middle of a housing crisis. They only shelved it because they didn’t have the votes.

Now the Mayor is calling Prop I a “slush fund.” The fund would be run by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development. His own office. With yearly audits on every dollar. If he doesn’t trust his own office to spend housing money on housing, that’s a him problem. 🫖

He declared a “rent emergency” with no actualemergency powers and no rent freeze. Meanwhile New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani froze rents for a million tenants. SF got a few modest bills and a press release.

Here’s what Prop I actually does:
-About $120M a year for affordable housing, social housing, saving rent-controlled buildings, and keeping people in their homes
-Paid for by an existing tax on property sales over $10M, so your taxes don’t go up
-Yearly audits so we see where every dollar goes
-City Hall can’t cut it without coming back to voters

Rents are up over 25% in a year. Evictions are on pace for a 10-year high. 17,000 affordable homes are approved and sitting unfunded. If it’s really an emergency, keep the promise voters already made.

Vote YES on Prop I by November 3rd. 🗳️

Sixty San Francisco organizations don’t agree on much. They agree on Prop I.

Teachers and the Sierra Club. The League of Women Voters and the Tenants Union. Seven labor unions. GLIDE. Small business groups. Neighborhood associations from the Haight to Potrero Hill.

On the other side: four real estate donors and $2,025,100.

Prop I doesn’t raise your taxes. It dedicates a tax that already exists, on property sales over $10 million, to building affordable housing.

Your ballot is already in your mailbox. Yes on C and Yes on I.

#SanFrancisco #SFpol #SFelection League of Women Voters of San Francisco. Yes on Prop I. San Francisco needs a dedicated, reliable source of money for affordable housing, and this delivers one without increasing taxes. This takes money our government already collects on big real estate deals, and uses it to help solve the affordable housing crisis, at no extra cost to most San Franciscans. Vote through November 3, 2026.

Prop C is the commitment. Prop I is how we pay for it.

Both run through the same system — the same nonprofit developers who have built here since 1978, the same city housing office, the same annual Controller audit. The difference is where the money comes from: Prop C sets aside a share of the General Fund, Prop I dedicates a tax on property sales over $10 million that voters already passed in 2020.

Only one of them is being called a slush fund. It’s also the only one with $1.74 million campaigning against it.

10,670 affordable homes in San Francisco are approved, sited and drawn — waiting on money.

“Slush fund” is a serious accusation. So here’s someone who would know.

Ed Harrington was San Francisco’s Controller for seventeen years.

His verdict on Prop I:
“It’s not a slush fund.”

He’s right, and it isn’t close. Prop I money is spent by the Mayor’s own housing office, through the same competitive process as every other affordable housing dollar in this city, and audited every year by the Controller. Not one dollar goes to any organization by name.

That is also exactly how Prop C works — the measure the people attacking Prop I are spending $1.74 million to pass.

Same nonprofit developers, building here since 1978. Same office. Same audit. The only difference is where the money comes from.

We're proud to share our photographs produced for a print campaign mailer for Prop I (@sfguaranteeact), recently distributed citywide across San Francisco. Beautifully photographed by our frequent collaborator @laurenmorrelltabak, these portraits capture the heart of the message: keeping San Francisco accessible for the workers, families, and residents who give this city its soul.

On our production day last month, all of our great talent repeated over and over, "I need an affordable apartment" and we agree, "We need Prop I"!
