Thrilled to announce a new role as international author curator @sfinternationallitfest alongside a wonderful team. I’ll still be doing all my other jobs on radio, on podcasts, plus chairing and hosting live events. This new consultancy will sit very well alongside everything else. Just have to get used to doing some work on Mountain Time. So happy to be working alongside an excellent group of people and championing the authors I love. It is already a great line up for May 2027. #litfest #santafenewmexico #santafeinternationalliteraryfestival #authorcurator

This one is bittersweet to post… it was our 6th and final bookstore we visited on our incredible family road trip across Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. Take the trip. Visit that place you’ve been wanting to go to for so long. Go with the people you love. Our lives are so short. Make the most of it! 🏜️

Happy Pride Month, readers! We invite you to celebrate with us on Tuesday, June 16th at the South Broadway Cultural Center where we will be joined by Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Less", Andrew Sean Greer to chat about his new novel, "Villa Coco". Andrew will be in conversation with local romance author and friend of Bookworks, Emily Zipps.

Tickets are still available! Grab yours at the link in our bio. We can't wait to see you there!

About Villa Coco:

An aspiring archivist determined to begin a "serious" life after an undistinguished undergraduate career takes up residence in the Italian countryside. Here, he becomes the all-purpose assistant to the Baronessa, known to her friends as Coco, a defiantly youthful and naturally flamboyant woman of ninety-two. Amid a chaotic and colorful milieu of gin-swilling princesses, incomprehensible handymen, roaming boarhunters, nuns, and other local wildlife, our young man does his best to catalog the villa's extensive collection of art and antiques--although he notices that things seem to go missing from right under his nose.

Despite himself, he tumbles into an affair with a married man, complicating his future plans considerably. And when the Baronessa loses someone close to her, he becomes an unwitting accomplice in the acceleration of Coco's great and final plan: to locate the love of her life and be reunited before it's too late. Told with the signature wit, charm, and humanity that made Less an international phenomenon, Villa Coco is a dazzling, sun-soaked ode to life itself, a meditation on how seriously we ought to take ourselves, and a bawdy Mediterranean ballad about becoming who we've always wanted to be.

We want to share a few small but very Bitter Southerner moments from the @sfinternationallitfest last weekend. Slide through to hear @ocean_vuong, @legroff @realcolmtoibin @rebeccasolnit and @jamesmcbrideauthor. @isabelwilkerson’s opening remarks were beyond beautiful and @kieselaymon was everything we already knew him to be … wicked funny and capital b brilliant. Of course there were inspiring talks and conversations about books and the writing process but there was also a common thread of world changing running through the weekend amongst the authors and many many festival goers. The Santa Fe International Literary Festival is world class. We wish we could take all of you with us. If there’s any way you can get there next year or any year, we hope you do.

We are so grateful to dear friend and supporter of our work and the festival, Dana Pope Manning, for including The Bitter Southerner in the sponsorship of all those magnificent talks. To the Executive Director, Megan Mulry, you are a marvel. Thank you and your team for an extraordinary experience and hospitality.
