Nobody tells you this early enough: the decision rarely comes with certainty attached. You build the certainty afterward.

I’ve watched senior executives freeze at year end planning because they’re waiting to feel sure before they commit. That feeling doesn’t come first. It comes from what happens after the decision, not before it.

Here’s the sequence that actually works, from thousands of decisions across thirty years in rooms where the stakes were real.

Pick a direction. Not the perfect one, the one that’s defensible with what you know today.

Identify four or five things that will support that direction. No more. More than five and focus turns into scatter.

Move on all of them at once, visibly, so the people around you understand where you’re headed and why.

This isn’t just a boardroom lesson. It’s the same pattern I’ve seen play out in job offers, career changes, relationships, moves to a new city, every major fork I’ve faced in thirty years of business and life. The decision itself was rarely the hard part in hindsight. What was hard was the stretch of time I spent circling it instead of choosing and building the case for it.

If you’re early in your career, or early in adulthood, this matters even more. You won’t have the resume or the track record yet to justify big swings.

What you will have is speed, clarity, and the discipline to commit before you feel ready.

That’s an advantage most people your age don’t use.
