Keeping our neighborhoods safe is one of my top priorities. I’ve heard from residents and merchants about their public safety concerns, and I want you to have the opportunity to hear directly from the officials responsible for addressing them.

Join me, SFPD Chief Derrick Lew, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, and local public safety agencies for a Sunset Public Safety Town Hall.

📅 Wednesday, October 28
🕕 6:00–7:00 PM
📍 United Irish Cultural Center, 2700 45th Avenue
🎧 Cantonese interpretation available through headsets

We’ll discuss police staffing and response times, reporting crime and getting follow-up, retail theft, vehicle break-ins, illegal fireworks, and traffic and pedestrian safety, including safe e-bike riding.

The program will include updates from public safety officials and a Q&A with questions submitted by residents in advance. Resource tables will also offer an opportunity to connect directly with public safety agencies and community organizations for crime prevention information, victim services, and other support.

I caught up with Officer Hewitson from Taraval Station at the Sunset Night Market’s Autumn Moon Festival on Irving Street. These events bring our neighbors together and help more people discover the local shops and restaurants that make the Sunset special.

Thank you to Sunset Mercantile, Wah Mei, Into The Streets, ASIAN Inc., and everyone who came out to support our merchants. Come back to Irving Street to shop, grab a bite, and support our neighborhood businesses year-round!

This morning, residents reported seeing a mountain lion in front of their homes. SFPD quickly responded, established a perimeter, and alerted neighbors to shelter in place and stay out of the area.

California Fish and Wildlife, San Francisco Animal Care and Control, and the San Francisco Zoo’s veterinary dart team responded and coordinated a plan to safely tranquilize the mountain lion. After being darted, it ran from the perimeter and took cover in nearby bushes, where the tranquilizer took effect.

I especially want to recognize our Animal Care and Control officers. When the mountain lion bolted, they stepped in to contain it and protect the public. Their courage and professionalism were remarkable.

Thankfully, no one was injured and no property was damaged. The mountain lion was safely removed by California Fish and Wildlife.

I’m grateful to all of our first responders and partner agencies for their quick coordination, and to our neighbors for following public safety instructions.

Today, we remember September 11, 2001 — the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the first responders and everyday people who showed extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

9/11 also reminds us of the strength that comes from standing together. In the days that followed, communities across the country came together to support one another, look after their neighbors, and remember what connects us.

At Park Police Station, we honor that spirit through service, community, and our commitment to being there for one another and for the people we serve.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

This is the first post from Fenix Society.

We chose to begin with the Official 25th Anniversary 9/11 Commemorative Challenge Coin because, before we tell you what we make, we want you to understand why we exist.

Fenix Society was born from Guardians of the City and from a belief that service should be honored, its history should be preserved, and the organizations supporting these communities should be strengthened.

This Friday, the San Francisco Fire Department will hold its 25th Annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony.

Every City first responder attending the ceremony will be presented with this official commemorative coin.

It was created to remember those whose lives were taken, honor the first responders who answered, and recognize the responders, workers, volunteers, service members, and citizens who came forward in the days, months, and years that followed.

September 11 also shaped a generation. Many answered that moment by choosing lives of service to their communities and country.

Created by Fenix Society in partnership with Guardians of the City, San Francisco Fire Fighters Local 798, the San Francisco Police Officers Association, and the San Francisco Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, the coin connects our national story of remembrance with San Francisco’s first responder community.

One side preserves the people, places, and four flights forever connected to September 11. The other brings San Francisco’s public safety organizations together, United in Service.

At three inches across and five millimeters thick, it was made as a substantial commemorative piece to hold, display, explain, and eventually pass forward.

A limited public release is also available. Proceeds benefit Guardians of the City and its First Responder Museum & Safety Learning Center.

More than 80% of Fenix Society’s profits support our nonprofit and public safety partners.

So this is where Fenix begins.

With remembrance.
With partnership.
With purpose.

Remember the Fallen.
Honor the Heroes.
Preserve the History.

Learn more and access the public release through the link in our bio.

💙🌺Welcome to my new office. 💙🌺
I have been in this building for the past few years, but this space is new and very special to me. After my mentor, Dr. Mark Kamena, retired, I had the honor of opening this office and creating a space that reflects my heart, my history, and the people I am privileged to serve.

The first room you enter is dedicated to first responders. 💙❤️
I wanted the people who walk through my door to immediately know that their service, sacrifice, history, and stories matter here. This room honors the communities I have spent so much of my career serving. #FirstResponders #FirstResponderMentalHealth #PoliceWellness #FirefighterWellness #SFPD

🌺💙There is history on these walls, and a lot of it is personal.
The large photograph shows the San Francisco Police Department gathered in front of San Francisco City Hall. My stepfather, Robert Fitzgerald, an SFPD Sergeant who has since passed away, helped start the San Francisco Police Museum. The photograph hung in his garage for years, and I recreated it here so part of his history could stay with me.
My walls also hold pieces of SFFD history, photographs from people I love, and memories of first responders whose stories deserve to be remembered.

🌺💙❤️Welcome to my Aloha Room. 🌺
I grew up dancing and competing in hula, so bringing the spirit of aloha into my therapy room felt like bringing a piece of myself into the space.
Aloha is more than a greeting. To me, it represents connection, compassion, presence, respect, and care. This is a room where you can sit down, exhale, and just be.

🌸🌺💙Sometimes the little things matter most. 💙❤️🌸
There are journals, stress balls, keychains, squishies, grounding tools, Starbursts, books, water, and little reminders throughout my office that you are cared for here.
And yes, you can absolutely take a Starburst.
