Fast moving wheeled things can be VERY exciting to herding dogs. They’ve been bred to watch and move livestock, making quick movement an exciting and enticing stimulus. Ruby really wants to herd bikes so we move over, shorten the leash and play a game of catch instead.

We work with her instincts by making the treats move (throwing them), using crunchy treats to allow for a “nip” and “chimp” sensation and letting her get her desire to chase and nip out in more appropriate ways like playing with balls, tug and appropriate chew toys!

Your annual reminder that if you have water dogs I am happy to take them to get wet in the heat!! Ruby and Reagan have lake access near their house so we played in the water to help beat the heat today.

I am working on a solution to bring some water to pups but a full kiddy pool in the back of my car doesn’t feel sustainable. If you have any ideas I’m all ears!

Life isn’t real? Pet the dogs, all of them. Eat all of the cheese. Fuck it, work at a dive bar 2 days a month and go back to the brewery you’ve worked at for 8 years on and off that you explicitly told your bestie (the boss) to punch you in the face if you ever said you’d work there again. Spoiler: she hasn’t punched me yet. Get the nachos at McKee’s when their kitchen is open. Text your favorite people very last minute to hang on their screened porch and have an amazing all local vegetable dinner. Drink out of cups, be a bitch. And yeah, the dogs. They make everything better 😎

Ruby is doing really well in her muzzle training! It can be a long hard road, especially for the more touch sensitive pups. But after a lot of work by her guardians and friends Ruby is allowing the muzzle to be buckled around her head which is such a big step!

Muzzles can be wonderful for all kinds of reasons. It can keep dogs and humans safe from bites, which is what we all think of. But they can also be used to prevent dangerous scavenging, they can be a signal to others that you and your dog need space and can be a piece of mind for everyone during new introductions as well.

Swipe to see Ruby working on her comfort with her @officialbaskerville muzzle with some @honestkitchen kitchen kibble rewards.

Ripping, shredding and scavenging are all natural and necessary behaviors for our dogs. Today Ruby and Rae got to take advantage of my recycling bin over flowing and get to rip apart some paper to release treats, shred the paper and cardboard to their heart content AND THEN scavenge for treats in the grass. We got 15 minutes of fun for about handful of treats and some cardboard clean up when they were done.

Swipe for a video of the treat bomb exploding as Ruby rips it apart.

Rae here showing you her BEST trick, puppy eyes and soft ears. Not the hardest to master, but the one that works to get a treat from me every time she uses it!

Sometimes being a quiet, senior sibling to a more outgoing and pushy dogs means you get less specific enrichment time. She never complains while waiting, but I do my best to make sure Rae gets some special attention and games too! In the mean time she’s always happy to roll around on her own and find some branches and bushes to investigate.

Ruby loves all the places treats can be hidden to search out in the rock wall.

I love an empty playground to play on for dogs. New surfaces, weird smells, places to hide treats, things that move funny. All ways to keep bodies and minds engaged and an easy way to keep things low impact for seniors and dogs working through injuries.

Note: playgrounds belong to the kids first, if kiddos show up but polite and move on so they can play safely and comfortably. This is less of an issue when it’s below freezing.

Dinosaurs are not extinct! Velociraptors have just evolved into cattle dogs. If you’re lucky they might let you close enough to pet you back, with their teeth, because they love you.

Heelers are mouthy dogs. It’s important to give them outlets to use their mouths so you and your clothes don’t become that outlet. They want to heel cattle to move them. On the absence of cattle they will try to move children, furniture, other dogs, tennis balls, anything! All of that involves using their mouths if left to their own devices.

We love a good roll! The silly faces along the way are a bonus to them fulfilling a safe and natural desire and behavior.
