Clearly not the way I wanted to end my trip to Alaska but unfortunately the way that it went. Two days ago at the end of the day I got caught in an avalanche. I was trying to ski to the left to escape when the slide sent me off a small drop. My feet went down first, got caught underneath the snow, and my upper body continued to twist. My binding did not release and I felt and heard a twist and pop in my knee. I knew immediately that my knee was done. I was still caught in the slide at that point and was able to pull my airbag. Luckily I did not get buried. I was the 11th track down this ridge and we had not seen any signs of instability prior. We were riding this face as a test for a much bigger one. I almost bailed from this run due to poor light and time concerns but went for it anyway. It’s easy to have hindsight as to what you could’ve done after the fact but that won’t change anything. After the slide had stopped, my knee felt completely destroyed. I lifted my pants and saw my knee slide to the side well my shin remained to the left. I could not put weight on it and I was still 25 miles out in the backcountry. With clouds rolling in and it being almost 6, it was time to act quickly. Big thanks to @odb.crad @shabbashugz @bangercertified @joshgold._ and @tetonbrown for helping me out in a shitty situation. Also huge shutout to @seabaheli for coming to the rescue and bringing a heli to get me off the mountain. Don’t think I would’ve been able to make it out on my own.

Now I am back home and was lucky to get in to see a doctor and get an MRI. As I had suspected, my knee is fully destroyed. Torn ACL, PCL, MCL, patella, meniscus, and bone bruising. The only ligament that still seems to be intact is my LCL.

I have a long road to recovery ahead of me and I am excited to begin that process. If you know me, you know that downtime is not easy for me so this is going to be a hard one, but I have accepted what is to come and ready to put all my energy into getting strong again. I want to also give a big thank you to @adventure.k as she has already been there as a huge support. Love you so much.
