I’m so proud to be Guyanese-American! My dad, a Guyanese immigrant who came to the U.S. at 20, raised us with a deep understanding of our culture and heritage. My earliest memories are of him sharing stories of his Guyanese upbringing, stories rich with pride, resilience, and connection. And growing up, eating Guyanese food was EVERYTHING. Pepperpot is not just food; it’s culture. It’s family. It’s home. To know Guyanese culture is to know there’s no Christmas without pepperpot. It’s a dish rooted in Indigenous Amerindian traditions, made with cassareep—a rich, dark syrup from cassava that’s the heart of this dish. And while meat traditionally played a role, the real stars are the plants! 🌱 Cassava, cinnamon, cloves, and hot peppers bring the flavors to life.
