On September 15th, alongside mural and special bench, we unveiled this welcome figure as part of the grand opening of T’souke Nation’s beautiful new community complex and health centre A’PEŁ I’SOT ALEN.

Tejas Collison and I carved it along side Natassia Davies and Jordan Hill, T’Souke Nation members, and with input from the community it was decided that the figure would honour the late Linda Bristol, a who was a leader and strong supporter of the arts.

We modeled the figure after Clamoise, the Wild Woman in T’souke culture, who stands upon the Killer Whale, one of the Nation’s crests. She is surrounded by the seasons, herring, frogs, camas and dragonflies, and family members in the form of eagle and owl. Finally, Linda’s crests, the wolf and sun, are carved into her shawl.

This was a particularly special project for me because I grew up just around the spit and along the beach from one of the T’Souke reserves. It feels good to know it stands near my childhood home, among the community who supported me as a young artist and people who were part of making me into the person I am today.

I’m not sure where the name originated, but I heard it for the first time from Monique Pat, and for the figure that honours her mom, it couldn’t be more befitting of this uplifting project…
