POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The most inspiring part of belonging to a literary community is being surrounded by incredible humans doing incredible things. So this post is a celebration of a few friends who recently published a book.

I'm not going to pretend that I'm not biased. That would be disingenuous because I love all of these people. And even so, I think the work is objectively good. If you are in the market for exploring some new poetry, you will find something to captivate you in any of these collections.

Summer of Reviews continues! Let me tell you about three books I love by A.M. Hayden, Kristin Lueke, & Kaitlin Neal

Read my reviews: Summer of Reviews tab on TURNEYTALKS.COM

rabbit head gut by kaitlin neal

I chose a few lines and presented them as prompts. See all of the prompts in the post on my website. One of my favorite pieces is “The Coffee Table” with this line about the chairs around the table: “he got them for a family/ no longer seated.”

How to Tie Tobacco by A.M. Hayden
wild-ink publishing

If you have family lineage or ties to the South (like I do), you’ll be able to smell Irish Spring, taste fried okra, and feel the weight of matriarchal sadness when you read How to Tie Tobacco. Read the full review on my website.

here I show you a human heart by kristin lueke
kristinlueke.com

I presented some personal connections to the pieces in this collection. One is about my time in high school in Hungary that helped me connect to the poem, “while picking plums.”

A note from Rachel: I am looking for folks to review my two books with small presses, too! Record Player Life (the b-side) and Retired Wannabe Club Kid. If you can write a review for me and help spread the word about my collections, please email me for a free digital review copy.
Thank you. The books are also for sale on my website: TURNEYTALKS.COM turneytalks@gmail.com

I don't always love what I write, and certainly with some time and distance (and what I hope is an evolving level of poetic skill), revisiting older work can be not so pretty. But almost a year on from writing, and six months since its initial publication in the inaugural @shadowandsax poetry journal, I still rather like this poem. I think it captures something very honest about me, but also something collective, in a way I wasn't expecting at the time.
So, I'm so pleased to have a cause to share it again, following a publication in @voicemailpoems.
Follow the link in my bio to hear me read the poem, too!

No poem today BUT I recently hit 500 followers, so I think it’s probably time I tell you a bit about myself! Thank all of you who’ve followed me and are supportive of my work 💜 claiming the identity of “poet” was really not in my bingo card and it’s been so fun to meet everyone!

To all the many talented poets across Canada—we’re so grateful and honoured that so many of you are interested in submitting to Cactus Press.

As some of you know, we currently only accept unsolicited submissions from within Quebec.

To help you find the right home for your work, we’ve put together a list of Canadian chapbook publishers who are actively accepting manuscripts.

EDIT: Adding Toronto based Shadow and Sax to the list.

Happy hunting!

I’m so happy to share that my poetry pamphlet, MAMMOTH BONE HOUSE will be published with Shadow and Sax Press!!!

I’m deeply grateful to Ryan, Jessica, and the team at Shadow and Sax for believing in the work and for bringing such care to the process.

It means a lot to see these finding their way into the world.

I’m so blown away by Urchin, the new chapbook from Sandrine Letellier (@aftermath.poems). Truly. One of the finest chapbooks I’ve read in some time. Urchin was published by @shadowandsax this year, and if you enjoy cerebral, intense, artful, avant garde poetry, you need to order this immediately. And follow @aftermath.poems because she posts amazing work here on IG.
My favorite poetry release so far in 2026, and it sets a high bar for upcoming releases.
Swipe to read some of my favorite passages from Urchin (and some of my favorite entire poems) interspersed among shots of my mule deer friends who came calling at home this afternoon.

Published in the brilliant @shadowandsax poetry journal in December. A poem of migration, language, family and love, which is pretty special to me. As always, grateful to @ryan_difrancesco for giving it a home.
