For readers looking for a no-spice dark fairytale retelling. ✨

Threads of Red by Julie Wright @scatteredjules

This was a much darker, more intense fairytale retelling than I expected! That being said, it was one of those books that was hard to put down. The magical fairytale atmosphere, danger at every turn, race to save her sister, and ALL the mysteries/secrets kept me turning the pages.

The romance takes more of a backseat to the adventure and the girls’ evolving relationship. And be prepared for ALL the love triangle drama! (No cheating involved).

Overall, Red’s journey to save her sister while uncovering the truth made for a gripping adventure.

⚠️ Please check the content warnings in the caption under the next slide to see if this is a good fit for you.

➡️ Thank you to the publisher @shadowmountainpub and @properromanceseries for sending me a copy of this book. All opinions in my review are my own.

I think this is YA due to the age of the characters but the author doesn’t pull any punches.

⚠️ Content:

🖤 Dark themes: Emotional abuse, physical abuse, and neglect by a parent; betrayals; murders,

🔮 Magic: Dark magic, curses, and dangerous enchantments involving blood. There is also magic used for good too.

⚔️ Violence: Frequent fighting, injuries, blood, and death involving people and creatures

🌲 Atmosphere: Dark, creepy, cursed woods and menacing magical creatures

🖤 Overall feel: Dark, eerie, and intense

Am I a sucker for a grumpy/sunshine pairing? Why yes, yes I am. Give me the headstrong girl who believes in love and the jaded boy who's given up on trusting people. Give me that story where they transform and save each other.

If that sounds like your thing, too, I've got a book for you. ❤️

+++

A cynical shapeshifter. A hopeful princess. A love they never saw coming.

Silas Bennett grew up in a kingdom where magic-users are persecuted, especially those with the rare ability to transform into animals. After discovering he could shapeshift into a serpent, Silas was nearly killed—only to escape to a neighboring kingdom where he could study and use his magic freely. Now, he is determined to become a professor at the university he calls home, even though he is only nineteen. But first he must distinguish himself in his research field by proving that legendary magic stealers exist.

Princess Eliza, a hopeless romantic inspired by sonnets and their promises of true love, refuses to believe her beloved Henry perished at sea. She will do whatever it takes to find him and bring him home—even if it means traveling to another country and asking for help from a shapeshifting outcast.

With Eliza’s relentless optimism pitted against Silas’s unyielding cynicism, the two enemies can’t seem to have a civil conversation. But when they are unexpectedly bound by a pair of magical bracelets, which can only be unlocked by a kiss of true love, they quickly discover that they’ll have to work together as they navigate different languages, their past prejudices and fears, and a blossoming relationship. When their search for the truth about magic stealers threatens both Silas’s magic and Eliza’s safety, the two must learn to be vulnerable and trust each other’s hearts.

Oh my goodness this book!

I started reading this book physically but hadn’t finished by pub day so I also grabbed the audiobook. And Noah Wall was incredible! The book is set in London so she does narrate in an accent (in my opinion it’s down well but that’s also not something I worry about lol). So it wasn’t until after I realized she has also narrated some of my favorite audiobooks by Melanie Jacobson, Julie Christianson, and Kristine W Joy. So if you like the books, she’s narrated for those authors. You will absolutely want to grab the audiobook for this book.

I didn’t really read the blurb before I started so I went in completely blind, and I don’t know what my expectations were, but it exceeded every single one. I was rooting for these characters from the very beginning, and there was mystery and elements of the story I wasn’t expecting, and without giving too much away there was a part towards the end of the book that had me incredibly stressed to the point where I had to pause the book and calm down and remind myself it was fiction and everything was going to be ok. (spoiler alert it was ok in the end lol)

And the minute I finished this book, I texted every single one of my friends who loves historical romance to have them read this right away just because I want other people to experience this incredible story.

Thank you so much @sian_bessey for reaching out and sending me a gifted copy! I can’t wait to go back and read everything you have ever written.

Do you enjoy unique Jane Austen retellings?

I recently read and was really impressed with Silk and Sensibility by @margaretliseeley This book is a Sense and Sensibility retelling set in China during the Ming-dynasty. I don’t know if I ever would have imagined this type of setting for this retelling, but let me tell you, it worked and it worked so well; I loved the way the author blended Chinese history, culture, and heritage with this Jane Austen tale and made it shine in a whole new light.

I really loved getting the Chinese heritage and history while reading this as a fiction novel and was even surprised at times with some of the intensity based on the historical details. However, all those details and unexpected moments just made everything feel so much more realistic for me and gave me a greater appreciation of the characters. I loved how Aillin and Meilin were in the same family and situation, but their unique personalities led them to different choices and loves with such a great dynamic between them.

This book had romance and action, while also having so much about family and heritage. I really loved how fresh and unique it was and recommend it.

Thank you @margaretliseeley and @properromanceseries for my gifted copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Side note, the hardcover is gorgeous.

🌙Fantasy Friday🌙

Thank you so much @shadowmountainpub for my gifted copy!

Threads of Red by @scatteredjules
Available now!

I’ve read a lot of retellings over the years, so it’s always fun when I come across one that manages to show me something new! I loved the mashup of Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks, and it was fun picking up little pieces of other fairytales along the way. The magic system was great, and the woods were exactly what I picture when I think of a fairytale setting.

Loreda was a really interesting character, and I enjoyed watching her navigate the life she was given. Even with everything going wrong and the way she was treated, she stayed true to herself. But the real standout for me was the friendship between Red and Goldie. Watching their relationship grow and transform was such a highlight, especially as they both grew individually while building their bond. Their banter felt natural and genuine, and I loved how entertaining their dynamic was. Goldie also really surprised me by stepping up when it mattered and proving she was so much more than what everyone expected of her.

⁉️QOTD: if you could conjure any fairy tale mashup into existence what would it be?

Review of THREADS OF RED by @scatteredjules
Narrated by Emma Fay

Thank you Partner @shadowmountainpub for the gifted copy. I listened to the audiobook on Deseret Bookself subscription

Every time I read a new book from Wright it is my new favorite. Her writing is simply magical and this twisted fairytale retelling is stunning. The characters are excellent and I love how Goldilocks and Red Riding Hood are brought together in this story in a unique and satisfying way.

Red is such a great character. I loved her strength and determination. One character in particular surprised me and I enjoyed her journey and relationship with Red. I enjoyed the magic and the reason for entering the dark woods. All is creatively done.

The audio narrator, Emma Fay, does a great job with the characters. She had to dig deep for the magical ones and I enjoyed the tone for those. Her performance was strong for each character.

The twists and turns are exciting. I look forward to any book from this author and I can’t wait to see what is next.

QOTD: what book are you starting the weekend with?

❓Do you like mystery, redemption, history or romance in your books? If so, this might be a great choice for you, as it contains all of the above! I’m excited to share my review.

Review: “When You Rescued Me” by Sian Bessey is a beautiful story filled with mystery, redemption, history, and romance! Ms. Bessey’s books do not disappoint! You can always tell she does a great deal of research, and I learned a lot about the setting of this book (London 1776). I especially loved learning about the beginnings of Bow Street and that the Blind Beak (one of the characters in the story) was a real person. I love that our hero and heroine meet as children, and that short meeting changes their lives. They then meet again twelve years later and join up to solve an investigation and catch a criminal. The mystery aspect was such a great part of the story. The romance was sweet and clean. There are wonderful messages of redemption, justice, mercy, and compassion. I love that the characters learn that it is not our place to issue ultimate judgment and that God offers forgiveness, so we also are to forgive. I recommend this wonderful story to lovers of sweet romance with a dash of intrigue and mystery!

⚠️Content: I give this a G rating. See the trigger warning below for examples of the content.
⚠️TW: orphan.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.
