50mm tyres on a gravel bike. Have we gone too far?

That’s almost 2 inches of rubber (1.97” to be precise!) on Jade, my new @elves_bikes_uk Mori GTX.

I’m running @panaraceruk GravelKing X1s in 700x50mm, and looking at this photo, we’re definitely getting into mountain bike territory!

But is bigger always better?

More comfort, more grip and more confidence on rough terrain sounds great, but where’s the sweet spot between speed and capability?

I’m curious, what width tyres are you running on your gravel bike, and would you go wider or narrower?

Turns out Bromptons have standards and bogs are below them.

Dorenell Wind Farm was the destination for today’s cycling adventure and apparently somebody forgot to tell my legs it was going to be hilly pretty much straight from the start, even though I planned the route.

But with blue skies, sunshine and miles of gravel ahead, I really couldn’t complain.

The plan was a nice loop around the wind farm, until the trail slowly disappeared into a rather soggy looking bog. At that point, the wee Brompton wheels took one look at it and decided absolutely not. And I agreed.

So, loop abandoned and an out and back adventure it became.

I also took the @goprouk MAX2 along for the ride to properly capture the journey, the scenery, the climbs and probably a fair amount of me questioning my route choices.

And somehow, on the steepest section of the ride, I even managed to bag myself a 10th place Strava cup 🏆. I’ll take that!

I’m putting the full Dorenell adventure together for YouTube now, including plenty of MAX2 footage.

If you enjoy cycling adventures, questionable route choices and seeing where small wheels probably shouldn’t go, hit subscribe to GBScotland on YouTube so you don’t miss it when it drops.

Another adventure in the legs. Another story to tell.

Would you have carried on through the bog or turned around like me?

Easy Friday: Gravel ride to Bosham, West Sussex
.
Always a delight visiting Bosham, with it's cute little houses, boats and tidal paths
.
The tide was out which meant I could cycle where the sea should be again
.
Friday's are always an easier training day for me, so an opportunity to relax with the camera, be mindful and enjoy the scenery
.
Happy Friday all 💚

Testing my setup for the next ultra. ⚙️

Every long ride teaches me something. A bag that isn't quite in the right place, gear I never use, or something I wish I'd packed. That's why I always do a few fully loaded test rides before race day—it's the best way to dial everything in before it really matters.

I've put together my complete preparation process, packing tips, and checklist based on my own ultra-distance races.

You can find the full guide on the Velo Atlas Journal.

What's your next ultra? 👇

Meet the @quickprousa Blade.

First ride in the books and already a fan of this bike. Aero yet relaxed. Stiff but forgiving. But forget the ride quality can we talk about the custom paint tho? BLURPLE FADE I think we can call it. Let’s convince @quickprousa to make it a stock color 💜🖤

Full review to come after 1000mi. In the meantime hit me with any questions below ⬇️
