Join us for UCSC CREST’s inaugural Shadow Indigenous Worlds session with Cherokee artist, Richard D. York, on October 12, 2026 from 9:00–10:00 AM PDT (11:00 AM–noon CDT = 1600–1700 GMT). Richard is a nationally recognized Cherokee artist and citizen of the Cherokee Nation who lives in Sequoyah County within the Cherokee Nation Reservation. His multidisciplinary practice encompasses painting, photography, digital media, and the creation of traditional Native objects. Working in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and digital media, York explores contemporary artistic expression alongside the cultural knowledge and traditions of his Cherokee heritage. His traditional practice includes the making and study of drums, flutes, and shakers. Richard’s practice is grounded in Cherokee values of balance, reciprocity, stewardship, and respect for the sacredness of all beings. See Richard’s full bio attached below along with his artist statement. During this Shadow Indigenous Worlds session, Richard will be leading a behind-the-scenes tour of Sequoyah’s Cabin Museum in Sallisaw, Oklahoma and showcasing his art and Native instruments he has built throughout the years. Astronomer’s 1st AAS!✨🌌 In January, I got to attend the 247th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society in Phoenix, AZ to present my Little Red Dot research from my project at Caltech! I had a lovely time getting to network with the diverse group of scientists present and engage with their amazing work! I made some new friends, met up with some current ones, and learned a lot about more outreach and education opportunities in astronomy (my first love fr fr)! I cannot wait to attend my next one! 🌌✨ #aas247 #aas #astronomy #research #conference

Finding exoplanets is challenging, but with the newly installed Subaru Pathfinder Instrument for Detecting Exoplanets and Retrieving Spectra (SPIDERS), we may be able to capture family portraits of planets and their extrasolar systems! In this Shadow the Scientists session, you can join the SPIDERS team live from the control room as they test their technology on the Subaru Telescope. 📅 May 22 at 9:00 PM HST 💻 Virtual session on Zoom Along the way, you will hear the story of SPIDERS’ journey from Canada to Hawaiʻi, learn how students helped build the instrument, and get a sneak peek at its testing on targets that may host planetary companions. 🔗 Click in the link in our bio to register for this Shadow the Scientists session

Join Shadow the Scientists tonight to follow along as an observing team uses the Gemini North telescope to conduct remote observations from the control room at the Hilo base facility! 📅 May 6 at 7:30 PM HST 💻 Virtual session on Zoom Unlike “classical” observing nights, Gemini Observatory uses "queue observing mode," where Gemini staff take observations on behalf of science teams from all over the world. On any given night, Gemini staff determine the conditions on the ground and in the sky and the scientific priorities and choose from a pool of scientific programs to observe. This means anything could be observed on any night! Come along for this cosmic adventure as we explore the universe and share its wonders! 🔗 Click the link in our bio to register this session.

🌌 Join Subaru Telescope for its first live online events with a powerful new instrument, the ʻŌnohiʻula Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS)! During these free Shadow the Scientists (StS) sessions, you’ll be able to watch real-time observations as scientists collect spectra from distant galaxies. 🗓️ English Session: Wednesday, March 11, from 7:00 to 9:00p (HST) 🗓️ Japanese/English Session: Friday, March 13, 9:00 to 11:00p (HST) During these sessions, researchers will use ʻŌnohiʻula PFS to study a large sample of galaxies in some of the largest structures in the early Universe. Their goal is to map these immense cosmic structures, examine how often galaxies in the early Universe interacted and merged, and learn more about how these interactions influenced galaxy evolution, including the growth of their supermassive black holes. Subaru Telescope staff will also discuss how the ʻŌnohiʻula PFS was developed, demonstrate how the instrument is operated, and share the meaning of its Hawaiian name, ʻŌnohiʻula. 🔗 Click the link in our bio to register for a session today

Worlds like Tatooine, the iconic twin-sun planet from Star Wars, were once science fiction. Today, they are science! Planets orbiting stars beyond our Sun, known as exoplanets, are being directly imaged using advanced instruments like SCExAO at the Subaru Telescope. Join Shadow the Scientists and Subaru Telescope to go behind the scenes of how SCExAO combines extreme adaptive optics and coronagraphy to suppress starlight and reveal the faint glow of orbiting distant worlds. While an exoplanet may not appear in the raw images during this live session, you will gain insight into the powerful methods behind these observations, techniques similar to those used by the James Webb Space Telescope. That's not all — participants will also have the opportunity to listen to short talks by astronomers, scientists, and telescope operators, and will be able to ask questions during the event! 📅 February 26 at 8:00 PM HST 💻 Virtual 🔗 Click the link in our bio to register.
