Music really is therapy 🎶 It gathers us, moves us, and sometimes, takes us back to beautiful days like this.

And that’s what many of us need right now, it seems. We need community, we need to feel, and we need memories attached to experiences that continually bring us joy.

Cheers to many more sessions like this 🥂

Ever since I was little, rummaging through all our family photobooks, I’ve been mesmerized by the act of preserving and showcasing our memories of love. It’s always such an honor to be invited in and trusted to capture so much vulnerability and the quiet little moments of affection people have for one another.

Congratulations Graham & Allison on your engagement!I love you two 💘

Walk with me?

It’s like taking a deep breath and the sigh of relief (or release) that follows..

Almost..

You’ve arrived to now evolve again..
And then again..
And again til fin. .
Unless? Perhaps?

I like this multi-caption thing💗

I’m constantly confronted by the contradiction of being a Black woman in this world: how deeply we are needed and how easily we are discarded.

Our labor is constantly relied upon. Our leadership is quickly summoned when something or someone needs to be saved. Our resilience is praised as though our ability to survive harm makes that harm acceptable.

But when our safety requires accountability, particularly when that accountability disrupts the status quo, the sympathy afforded to us can disappear quickly.

That contradiction has shaped how I move through the world, but it has also shaped what I choose to build.

It is why I am intentional about creating spaces where Black women and queer women are not expected to shrink, assimilate, overperform, or make themselves easier for everyone else to hold.

Spaces where we can be loud. Soft. Brilliant. Complicated. Celebrated. Protected. Spaces where taking up room is not something we have to earn.

Because I know what it means to enter a room and calculate how much of yourself is safe to bring inside.

Over the next couple of months you’ll see more from me as I expand on this very topic through my writing, continue creating space for joy and connection through my events, and as I launch @sapphiccon arm in arm with some of the most impressive Sapphic folks in Kansas City.

As I keep moving toward everything I know I’m meant to build, I pray that peace and protection surround me and everyone connected to me.

I pray for discernment about the rooms we enter, the people we trust, and the things we give our energy to. I pray that we always have the courage to leave what does not feel safe, even when leaving is uncomfortable. And more than anything, I pray that the spaces I create offer black women some of the safety, softness, freedom, and care I have spent so much of my own life searching for.

I want to keep doing this work without abandoning myself or becoming hardened by what it takes to do it. I want to remain soft. I want to remain open. I want to believe that we can build something different.
