My essay on Polly Pocket being a femme top has been in print for a while but I’ve not shared it here yet. It is part of the very pretty book PLAYING FEMME, published by 16 Collective. Some of my (very serious) terminology „Polly-morphus perversity” and „play” made it into the Glossy-ary. 💅

A sentence from this essay that reappeared in my mouth earlier this week during my first mentoring session back at Turps Painting School „Play is very fucking serious.”

Designed by Nänni-pää “Playing Femme” features Shae Myles’s drawings and pictures of the exhibition documenting her giant Polly Pocket sculpture as a girl’s bedroom – the messy, tragic victorious horny domestic. While the texts offer perspectives from various intersections on the femme experience spectrum, the writing wrestles with the sticky, lurid fabric of nostalgia and sexuality. Some of this is epitomised by Sophie Robinson’s reflective essay “You fit in my fist: a bimboification of the heart” which looks at themes like inner child work, cuteness and eroticism (CW// sexual violence). Nell Cardozo’s fantasy erotic flash fiction follows Chloe Filani’s two love-full poems exploring black femme joy. Aga Paulina Młyńczak’s essay will take you into the soft bi territory of the butch-femme dynamic while – in her confessional piece – Chao-Ying Rao will lavish you with (solo) self-love. Kika Sroka-Miller offers an essay on femme dom/mes in seven conceptual vignettes. The final chapter is the Glossy-ary by Kelly Rappleye, which features a collection of femme terms from across the whole book to satisfy your curiosity and foster the pleasure of shared language.

✨🎀 PLAYING FEMME 🎀✨

Our publication launches this week! Join us this Thursday 13th at @good_press from 18.30 - 20:00 💕 where we’ll have both pre-recorded and live readings from the authors and artists.

This playful, pink hardback is a compilation of personal takes and essays exploring the notion of femme via the prompt of the Polly Pocket play kingdom. The writing wrestles with the sticky, lurid fabric of nostalgia and sexuality, with contributions from @sophiepoetry @nocardozo @1.chloe.f @aga.mlynczak @femme.castratrice @k_e_e_k and @k3llyc0le

Designed by talented @nanni_paa the book features drawings by @shae.guava which gleam with a saccharine nostalgia. Alongside confessional essays and erotic flash fiction are images of Shae’s 2023 exhibition, documenting her giant Polly Pocket sculpture as a girl’s bedroom, capturing the messy, tragic, victorious, horny domestic.

We are delighted to announce that months of intense programming work and business planning has helped us secure Multi Year Funding from @creativescots ✨, and want to say: thank you for trusting us.

We’re in great company and buzzing for this new phase, and the changes and growth it will bring. We would like to say thank you to our audiences and community for being here and also to congratulate everyone on the list! Many of you are the trail blazers we have looked up to and learned from, and we are happy to see others, like us, who got it for the first time. Many are also long term peers, collaborators, friends and icons such as @printclan @timespan_helmsdale @david_dale_gallery @rosiesdisobedientpress @sculptureplacementgroup @doorinthewallaa @marketgallery @transmissionglasgow @embassygallery and many more! We’re stepping into a new exciting era and wish we could raise a glass together with all of the orgs on the list and those who have been on this journey with us. 🥂

This funding comes at such a formative and fertile time for us as we pivot in a new direction with a new name: 16 Collective. We’ve got some exciting things in the pipeline that we can’t wait to share with you. Over the next three years, we’ll continue supporting marginalised gender and LGBTQIA+ artists, challenging sector-wide gender and class disparities and honouring our commitment to power redistribution within the UK arts sector. We will also work more with eco-conscious and place-based public site commissioning, host annual open calls for solo exhibitions and commission new works for a survey show.

In the meantime, we’ll continue working at our new temporary space at 173 Trongate in partnership with @outerspaces.scotland where we are looking forward to welcoming you very soon 💕

It is open to emerging and mid-career creatives who are eager to collaborate, explore new ways of working, and access career-enhancing resources.
