It’s always a treat seeing @shafooli walking through the door anytime I’m singing.
Thanks for bringing your smile, encouragement and kindness, brother.

If I may speak for the musicians around town- you are such a wonderful support and gift to us.

Sunday in the City: KP NOTE

I’m going to take a page from friendly jazz fan Sapalo’s “book of ideas” and suggest a jazz flight plan in Vancouver for Sunday! Are you a fan of vocal jazz artists? Well…in my wordy way I am going to suggest one that you may be interested in following. Who will be able to do all of these? Perhaps no one can attend this whole flight plan but some of you may be devoted and may have the ability to fly through our city catching an hour here, an hour there. Just like a Jazz Walk Festival.

Hero’s Welcome 2 PM – Star vocalist Steve Maddock makes his comeback after a year of no singing! Steve is appearing with an all-star band and this is a very important show in our city!! Welcome back dear Steve!! What a band to sing with: Bill Coon, Andre LaChance and Joe Poole. Indeed!

St. Andrews Wesley Church 4 PM – Vancouver vocalist Nancy Newman who has been getting rave reviews for her album “Dream” is singing the Jazz Vespers service with Michael Creber and Conrad Good.

Apollo’s – 5 PM – My talented friend Laura Crema is singing with Jillian Lebeck and Kody Buchart and will no doubt be sharing some beautiful standards with everyone.

Robson Skating Rink 6:30 PM – Juno nominated Andrea Superstein takes to the stage (and to the ice?) with a fabulous band: Tilden Webb, Sam Shoichet and Nino DiPasquale. Did you know Andrea was a competitive skater? Triple lutz? You’ll have to go to ask her!

2nd Floor Gastown 8:30 PM – C’est moi! KP with Dave Sikula and Conrad Good. After all that jazz flight won’t you be ready for MORE jazz and some delicious food as we perform our second set? I love singing there with these talented two!

Ok…just in case you want more and can split yourself into more than one person?

Sylvia Hotel 8 PM – Bonnie Northgraves and her group are always a swinging hit and the Sylvia is cozy and inviting. I’m not sure who Bonnie is playing with on Sunday but she always has a great band.

Frankie’s Jazz Club 8 PM – Holly Burke & the Naturalz have an eclectic program of music and Frankie’s is always top notch in every way.

https://www.rhythmchanges.ca/ is the place to find out where all the jazz and jazz adjacent gigs are every day!

@bbugarinovic and I have been gigging at @lombardospizza a few times now- another one coming up on April 25th 6-9pm

This little Italian eatery on commercial Drive is hidden away inside a building, but the vibe is very cool and the food is amazing.
Here’s a few pics of old and new friends who’ve been out to enjoy a meal and some live music with us.

Thanks Brenda and Brian who met me at the elevator through @vancouverjazz @brendalgordon ❤️🎶

See you next time!

#Shafooli.sessions Laura Crema, Bill Coon // Laura Crema & Bill Coon Quartet @frankiesjazz on Friday July 2nd, 2021
#20210702 @crema_laura @coon_bill @frankiesjazz @coastaljazz

Memory isn't what it used to be, details can be lost, diminished or malformed inside the haze of time, but I can recall a few things vividly from the first time I heard Laura Crema.

Early on in my time as a festival-goer I stood outside of the Ironworks on Alexander Street holding a ticket with the names Laura Crema and Sharon Minemoto. Was it a quartet? Was it a quintet? Was Bill Coon also on this gig? I can't recall, but I do know for a fact Paul Townsend was on drums and cymbals that night. I also know Paul Rushka was on upright bass because after starting a conversation with the couple ahead of me in line, I found out they were his parents!

Other details from that night have been lost, but I know the music and musicians made an impression on me. From that night on, I wanted to hear this group and its members again, and over the years I have been blessed to have been able to witness them play many times, in different formats and contexts.

This photo is from a fabulous 2021 Vancouver Jazz Festival performance by the Laura Crema/Bill Coon Quartet at Frankie's Jazz Club, one day after BC moved into Step 3 of the COVID-19 restart plan. They were joined by Miles Black on piano and Conrad Good on upright bass. The energy in the room felt different, some extra excitement. Perhaps it was because there were simply more people in the room because of relaxed capacity limits? Whatever it was, I'm looking forward to another dose of that magic soon.
