The mood in Abu Dhabi this season felt like a recalibration with some chapters ending and others beginning! @abudhabiart closed its final edition before @friezeofficial steps in, @nomadcircle’s debut here widened the region’s design lens, Furusiyya @shahnazgallery resurfaced an equestrian history that stretches back centuries and rarely gets this kind of platform (so proud of you @shahnaz__zm!), and @sothebys Collector’s Week wrapped it all with some of the most talked-about pieces on auction…aaaand that’s a wrap!

Part of our collection, loaned to the Victoria and Albert museum, a jewel of early Mughal textile artistry, this extraordinary zardozi canopy stands among the finest known survivals of its kind, offering a rare glimpse into the splendour and refinement of courtly textile arts. The Ain-e Akbari records that Emperor Akbar himself paid particular attention to the production of zardozi and this canopy, suspended above the throne, would have symbolised divine right and imperial majesty.

Composed of three panels of silk velvet, backed with cotton and lavishly embroidered with gold and silver-wrapped thread, the canopy reveals the technical brilliance and aesthetic refinement of the Mughal court ateliers. The velvet’s deep crimson hue mirrors the grandeur of royal taste, while the embroidery, executed with astonishing precision using single strands of gold thread, showcases the mastery of invisible couching stitches worked through both layers of fabric.

This post draws on the beautifully and in depth research by @avalonfotheringham from her essay in the exhibition catalogue, which has so eloquently illuminated the history and significance of this piece. She ends her essay with;
“It is easy to envisage our canopy in this position, its lush crimson velvet and glittering gold thread hanging above an emperor enthroned, and in its opulence glimpse the power of the empire beyond.”

To see this rare work from our collection head over to The Great Mughals exhibition at the V&A.
Don’t miss the chance to witness these Mughal masterpieces before they disappear from view! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
