“Electrons repel each other... so how can they touch?”

Yan Shao on the quantum side of her practice - our first reel in a series on her “electron_matter” piece. A short experimental film built to make quantum physics felt rather than explained, starting with a single electron alone in the void: uncertain, unstable, meeting only itself before it ever becomes part of an atom.

“What if the interface is not a window, nor a door, but a scar?”

k0j0 open with a SUPER REAL product launch - Gradi Vox, an AI wearable that only speaks when you speak - and let it hijack the presentation from there. How can care, empathy and good intentions harden into cognitive conditioning, and why friction is the last honest thing an interface can offer you.

“The creative power of darkness and the suggestive nature of the unknown.”

Sam Price on Boxels – his just-finished Parsons MFA thesis, a display system that doesn’t just depict material reality but participates in it through illumination, kinetics, and physical presence. Built for installation and live-performance spaces, so the work reacts to the visitor instead of sitting divorced from them on a stage.

“Is algae bloom an environmental hazard or... does it say something fundamental about life evolution?”

Yan Shao on using new media art to make invisible relations visible - walking through her early algae works: Algae Chorus, an interactive sound installation built with three types of living algae, and Autopoiesis, a simulated bloom projected into water.

“It’s kind of an elusive concept.”

On June 26th, we hosted DATLAB 17 at @zerospace and brought together four different practices - interactive shaders, scientific visualization, immersive installation, and critical design - into one room. We’re excited to continue being a stage for artists to share work and push the new media community forward.

Featuring
@ojrgb Omer’s magic mindset on making cool stuff over “art” (and guarding human time in an AI workflow)
@ss.syan Yan’s electro_matter turning quantum physics into felt cinema
@sprice_studio Sam’s Boxels display that participates in physical reality rather than just simulating it
@koi_xuanthefish & @joey.verbeke k0j0 on how care, good intention, and optimization can become a system of cognitive conditioning.
