Wellesley College Theatre invites the general public and campus community to FREE performances of Shakespeare's beloved Much Ado About Nothing!

The Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) present Much Ado About Nothing in a unique actor-driven production, with just 5 actors and minimal tech, featuring Pamela Flanagan, Grace Lilley, Chenise Lynette, Hayden Mampasi, and Alex Phelps.

Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's most imaginative and exuberant comedies, contrasting two pairs of lovers in a witty and suspenseful battle of the sexes. Attracted to each other, the maddeningly skeptical Beatrice and Benedick are dead-locked in a lively war of words until their friends hatch a plot to unite them. The mutually devoted Hero and Claudio, on the other hand, all too quickly fall victim to a malicious plot to part them. Near-fatal complications ensue, but with the help of the hilarious Constable Dogberry and his confederates, the lovers are ultimately united.

About AFTLS:
Actors From The London Stage was founded in 1975 at the University of California, Santa Barbara, by Professor Homer “Murph” Swander and the renowned stage & screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart. One of the oldest established touring Shakespeare companies in the world, the AFTLS company ethos and mission is simplicity at its finest. Five actors take the stage, with minimal props and costumes, and direct themselves in a performance of a complete Shakespeare play, with each actor portraying multiple roles. Coming from such prestigious companies as the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre of Great Britain and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, these classically trained actors are equally dedicated to presenting first-rate professional performances, and to working with students to bring Shakespeare’s work alive.

Alongside free public performances, the company of five actors will lead classes and workshops throughout the residency week.

They will be popping up in your classes and spaces across campus all week during their residency, and perform their 5-person (!) MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Thursday-Saturday on the Barstow stage in Alumnae Hall. Free!

We’ve been rehearsing away for the last 5 weeks and will be taking our brill show across the pond for the next 3 months. A new state every week before ending back where it all started in London Town.

Ah-the melancholy Jaques! Played brilliantly by Sarah Scanlon. Loved these wide leg trousers we made in the shop with a pleated paper bag waist and suspender buttons. 😍The rest of her look was discovered in the NDSF costume stock! The costume gods were smiling down upon me—I always love the thrill of the hunt—going back to the racks over & over again to finally discover the magical garments that truly make a costume sing! Sarah rocked this look!!

Sneak peek into “What Do You Believe; An Art Installation Inspired by the Scottish Play”

For so long I’ve wanted to explore what it means to identify myself as an installation artist. I’ve wanted to push myself outside of the white wall gallery and the museum. Theatre has been a dream of mine since my debut role as “cool cat #4” in the 2005 family playhouse production of Aristocats in Alexandria Louisiana. I probably knew then that my place was not ON the stage but somewhere working creatively along the periphery.

The last three months have been EXACTLY that!

I’ve been brought on this summer to work as the Visual Artist here in residence at the Notre Dame Shakespeare festival. I’ve been building something giant and crazy…and well….. ummm learning about Shakespeare.. The professional Company is performing Macbeth & I am making something really cool right alongside them.

I’ve been learning a lot about what it means to make art for an audience that may not have come looking for it & the result is…..
