We are thrilled to introduce Shana. Shana Keller is the Director and Lead Educator at Topsail Apogee, where she brings together a lifelong curiosity about how the world works with a passion for innovation, exploration, and educational excellence. Her interest in science began early: as a child growing up in Middle America, she was endlessly fascinated by questions as simple—and as profound—as how clouds could stay in the sky. That instinct to ask why and how has remained at the center of her approach to education and continues to drive her commitment to cross-disciplinary STEM and STEAM learning. ➡️ Shana’s academic foundation began at the University of Miami, Florida, and includes screenwriting studies at UCLA and songwriting courses at Berklee College of Music. She believes that creativity and analytical thinking are not opposing forces; rather, the strongest learning happens when students are encouraged to use both. Her interdisciplinary approach allows literature, history, mathematics, science, engineering, and the arts to intersect naturally, giving students multiple ways to investigate a question and demonstrate what they have learned. Her extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, along with a life shaped by frequent moves, have given Shana a broad perspective on cultures, communities, and diverse learning environments. Her experience as a substitute educator with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) further developed her ability to adapt to highly transient school communities and reinforced the importance of flexibility, leadership, and service in education. At Topsail Apogee, Shana translates these experiences into hands-on, project-based learning designed to turn curiosity into action. Students are encouraged to investigate real-world questions, experiment with ideas, build and test solutions, learn from failure, and approach challenges from multiple perspectives An award-winning children’s author, Shana has built her career around making complex ideas accessible, engaging, and meaningful to young leaders. Her books include Do You Know Them?, a Junior Library Guild Gold Standard selection, and Bread for Words: A Fr

This weekend, I had a wonderful opportunity to meet with some of the original Montford Point Marines and attend the Montford Point Marine ceremony and events in Jacksonville, NC. Surviving family members were presented with Congressional Gold Medals while the Secretary of the Navy honored the Montford Pointers, and shared their story of preserverence and resiliency. The Montford Point Marines were trained in a segregated camp in the early 1940s, now known as Camp Johnson. They fought for a nation that was slow to fight for them yet their determination to succeed as Marines was unwavering. Their stories are incredible. Had it not been for @mr_big_charles mentioning Camp Johnson and the Marines that were trained there, I would have missed this opportunity to hear their voices in person... so thank you! And to all the folks at @montfordpointmarinesmuseum, this was an event to remember and such an important part in preserving our history! 🤎🤎🤎 #montfordpoint #Marines #original #northcarolina #usmc #blackhistory #history #campjohnson #memorial #medal

Two books about two enslaved people who reached their limit and decided to do something about it. One fiction, one nonfiction. . .both powerful in different ways. •Freedom at Dawn• tells the true story of Robert Smalls through the eyes of his daughter, Lizzy. Imagine being forced to use your skills to support the system that enslaved you, and then quietly, carefully planning your escape anyway. •CeeCee: Underground Railroad Cinderella• is a fractured fairytale about a young girl enslaved and working for two cruel sisters. This fairytale doesn’t feature magic. It features courage which CeeCee uses to flee. Together these books highlight a powerful message. Freedom wasn’t given. It was taken, planned, risked for, and fought for in deeply personal ways.

An A–Z of brilliant Black picture book creators. 📚💛 I’m sharing this on the last day of February as a reminder that these voices belong in our read-aloud stacks all year long, not just during Black History Month. Let’s celebrate and amplify these storytellers throughout the year. Thank you to everyone who came out to today's storytime at Barnes & Noble! 🤗 @bn_mayfairetowncenter There was actually a scheduling snafu and they had two authors booked. But no worries, we shared the stage together and both read our books! It was a pleasure to meet @shanakellerwrites and get a copy of her book, "Do You Know Them? Families Lost and Found After the Civil War". Turns out we have a few friends in common. 🫶🏻 A big shout out to my bestie @mama_claus_ and Delilah for joining me! They are such a welcomed addition to any outting! I love seeing the kids interact with Delilah! 🫶🏻 She is such a calming presence. 🐾 @sweetd_therapy What a fun day! #storytime #collaborationovercompetition #localauthors #seaturtleconservation #childrensliterature
