FRIDAY 🗞️ DUMP
• NATIONAL STRIKE: if you can’t do everything, do something. #ICYMI Protesters across the U.S. are calling for “no work, no school, no shopping” as part of a nationwide strike on Friday to oppose the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown in Minneapolis.

• Journalist Don Lemon and three other people, including MN journalist Georgia Fort were arrested Friday in connection with an anti-immigration protest that disrupted a service at a Minnesota church and increased tensions between residents and the Trump administration, officials said.

Lemon was arrested by federal agents in Los Angeles, where he had been covering the Grammy Awards, his attorney Abbe Lowell said. It is unclear what charge or charges Lemon and the others are facing in the Jan. 18 protest at the Cities Church in St. Paul. Lemon’s arrest came after a magistrate judge last week rejected prosecutors’ initial bid to charge him.

• Senate leaders were scrambling on Friday to save a bipartisan spending deal and prevent a partial government shutdown this weekend as Democrats demanded new restrictions on federal immigration raids across the country.

• Tens of thousands of people entered their sixth day with no electricity Friday as the Carolinas and Virginia prepare for a significant winter storm that could bring more snowfall than some parts of North Carolina have seen in years.

The National Weather Service said arctic air moving into the Southeast will cause already frigid temperatures to plummet into the teens (minus 10 degrees Celsius) on Friday night in cities like Nashville, Tennessee, where many people still lacked power nearly a week after a massive storm dumped snow and ice across the eastern U.S.

• Trump said Friday he will nominate former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh to lead the central bank, ending a prolonged search process.

Warsh— who would succeed Jerome Powell as Fed chair this spring if confirmed by the Senate — has been a sharp critic of an institution that he argues has grown unwieldy and is in need of reform.
