❤️🐦 FIVE YEARS OF CARDINAL VALOR. 🐦❤️

October 23, 2021

Five years ago, I was a 29-year-old woman sitting in her dining room, still learning how to live without her mother, when a little spark of inspiration changed everything.

I ran to my computer, created an email, registered a domain, and started building something that finally felt entirely my own.

I named it Cardinal Valor, inspired by courage and my late mother's favorite bird, the red cardinal. ❤️

I had no idea where this journey would take me.

Five years later, there have been stages, speeches, exhibitions, advocacy, education, spiritual growth, beautiful collaborations, difficult lessons, extraordinary people, and countless moments that reminded me why I started.

I've grown alongside everything I've created. I've learned that courage isn't just surviving difficult things. Sometimes it's choosing joy, setting boundaries, trusting your gifts, sharing your story, and allowing yourself to become someone new.

And somewhere along the way, the people who truly understood the vision became part of the story, too.

I am not self-made. I am family-made, community-made, land-made, and ancestor-made.

To my late Mother whose love continues to inspire me. To my Father, who has witnessed every chapter. To my loved ones, colleagues, collaborators, and everyone who believed in my dream: thank you. ❤️

What began as a spark became a home for my voice, my values, my creativity, and my purpose.

And the most beautiful part?

Five years later, it still feels like I'm just getting started.

Here's to the stories we've told, the doors we've opened, the lives we've touched, and all the beautiful things we have yet to become.

May our roots continue to grow wings. 🪽

Happy 5th Anniversary, @cardinalvalor

Here's to life, love, courage, and the freedom to keep becoming. 🥂❤️

With love,
Ashley Ali

We had an absolute BLAST at Feelings Storytime today! So many SPECIAL GUESTS! Miss Sami read Bear Can’t Wait by Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman, and then she took out her guitar and led rousing renditions of both If You’re Happy and You Know It and The Wheels on the Bus. Next we had local author Shanita Liu @shanitacourage , who read her book “C is for Courageous” and talked about what it means to be courageous and brave and to believe in ourselves! Then Heather read us Steve Antony’s “Betty Goes Bananas!” About the frustrations of the youngest among us, and it was super relatable! Last (and certainly not least), the a Girl Scouts of Troop 2103 helped our patrons make their own Beans, a little companion so no one has to feel alone. The Girl Scouts taught us to wrap the yarn around forks and then use that bundle to create our beans. They were amazing!
Thank you to all of our friends who came today and thank you to all of our special guests who came to help our community feel brave! #eastrockawaylibrary #cisforcourageous #girlscoutsofnassaucounty

The Jahajee Indo-Caribbean Gender Justice Summit was a powerful reminder that care is revolutionary. Justice is what love looks like in public.
Our communities carry so much wisdom, resilience, and history. We also carry harm that must be named if we are to heal. Gender justice asks us to imagine relationships, families, and systems rooted in mutual respect, accountability, and compassion.
I’m grateful to be part of spaces where our voices, grief, joy, and visions are held with care. Where equity is not a buzzword, but a practice. Where liberation includes rest, pleasure, safety, and self-determination.
This work matters. Our people matter. And the future is something we build together.

Sitting on the panel at the Jahajee Indo-Caribbean Gender Justice Summit reminded me that healing is not individual work alone: it’s collective, intergenerational, and deeply political. Gender justice is not about fixing women. It’s about dismantling systems that normalize silence, sacrifice, and survival as virtues. It’s about creating cultures where care is not gendered, power is not hoarded, and liberation is shared.
To speak alongside organizers, elders, and change-makers rooted in Indo-Caribbean history and futures was an honor. Our stories are not burdens. They are blueprints.
Justice, to me, looks like equity, safety, dignity, joy, and choice for everyone. And it starts when we tell the truth out loud, together.

May our futures be bright, loving, balanced and wise together 🫂✨❤️🎇
