The most recent iteration of Dennis Yueh-Yeh Li's "Echoes of Arrival" was an absolute delight! "Becoming" explores the many ways immigrants remake themselves as they build a life in a new country. The rotating cast offers a variety of new stories, and this performance included Pascal Phoa, Nedelka Sotelo, Jeremy Rafal, Timmy Ong, and Shan Y. Chuang.

Our collaboration actually started back in 2018 for a @dryemarinarodanceco performance, which kickstarted this whole journey.
In 2022, after bringing Islanders to life at @culturelablic , Compound Playground @compoundplayground was officially born. After all the ups and downs along the way, we’re hosting our very first fundraising event, and doing it alongside @dryemarinarodanceco , who has been there with us since day one!
If you’re in NYC, we’d love for you to join us on Oct 3 for ”HOME | 咱兜“. If you’re not in town, you can still support us by donating through the link in our bio to help us reach our goal and keep going strong.
Thank you so much to everyone who’s been part of our journey. ❤️

Some production photos from ⟪春香牡丹失魂记⟫ 音樂劇workshop -

Still thinking about this production and the people who brought it to life.

I was fascinated to discover that the script was written by @qinan_x Ruirun, you can not believe it comes from a neuroscientist PhD.
Her literary background and the curiosity about where contemporary theater can go.

This is why I fell in love with musical theater so much~ When music and storytelling truly belong together, they can reach somewhere deeper, even change the way we feel and see the world.

I finally got to work with sha @shanychuang ~ After the performance, she gave me some new tools for moving from mezzo-soprano toward soprano in a healthier way.

@yuelanmusic originally composed the music with English lyrics in mind, yet with just a few adjustments, it fit the Chinese lyrics beautifully.
As an ABC, she has a natural ability to bring Chinese and Western musical theater together. Some passages were so emotionally demanding that I sometimes had to cry it out before going back to rehearsal.

Du Liniang杜麗娘 is a very young girl in the original text. But life experience allows me to understand the maturity of her perspective, especially the longing that makes it possible to recognize her soulmate.

this first time coming to New York to work has me so emotional I'm writing in Chinese 🥹 (my chinese writing kinda sucks so bear w me)
📸@seen.bybonnie

last february Christie sent me a message asking if I'd be interested in writing music for a musical and telling me she had met a playwright, Ruirun, writing a musical in New York who was very organized (and she was very correct, Ruirun is the most organized artist I know 😭)

at the time I had three reasons for saying yes: 1) to go to New York 2) to be able to write queer Chinese content and 3) to have the opportunity to incorporate traditional chinese-style music. otherwise I truly had no idea what to expect going into this project

however 睿润 has been a wonderful collaborator; we've had looooong long discussions over 4+ hour writing sessions reviewing and refining the plot, just to make sure that each character develops throughout the act and that we can immerse the audience as much as possible into the world of hell 😈

they have also been incredibly helpful in helping me understand the wonderfully poetic mandarin lyrics they've written! Chunxiang is their brainchild and it's been a privilege to help them bring this show to life. we've truly Been Through It together (the few weeks leading up to my travel to New York were filled with frantic last minute scrambling to finish songs)

we have also realized that writing songs in mandarin is REALLY FUCKIN HARD!! the words flow very differently from english; throughout both the songwriting and rehearsal process we've been continuously iterating and correcting lyrics and pitches to make things flow better

⟪Chunxiang: A Queer Musical⟫ Reading Workshop
Official Website:
https://chunxiang.cargo.site/chunxiang-project

Back in the theatre-
It’s such a great honor and privilege to perform in a musical workshop for Chunxiang: A Queer Musical, a new adaptation inspired by the Chinese literary masterpiece, The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭). The character Du Liniang (杜麗娘) is a young woman whose heartbreak leads to her death.

This workshop presentation is offered on a pay-what-you-can basis ($5–$20 suggested donation).
Tickets: https://shorturl.at/kvqyC

Musical Reading Info:
Time: Aug 15th 2026 @2:30 pm
Venue: Glow Cultural Center
Address: 133-29 41st Avenue, Flushing, NY 11355

Rather than retelling Du Liniang’s earthly tale of death and resurrection, the story follows her journey through the underworld as she awaits judgment from Yanluo Wang (the King of Hell).
The musical explores not only worldly passions and desire, but also the journey of a soul bound by karma after death, longing for liberation.
It is such a great honor and privilege to perform in the workshop presentation of Chunxiang: A Queer Musical, a new musical adaptation inspired by the Chinese literary masterpiece The Peony Pavilion (牡丹亭).

Website: https://chunxiang.cargo.site/chunxiang-project
