Instead of a tree, wreaths, or even presents, I spent the holiday season perfecting a vegan gluten-free persimmon loaf made with maple sugar! I ended up making 21 loaves. Took 5 batches to get it just right!

Made 7 quarts of persimmon purée, 3 cups of orange zest, and at least a quart of OJ. I milled almost all the flour at home.

This is my happy place.

Delivering some (hopefully) holiday deliciousness around the neighborhood!

Thank you to all of my taste testers!

My handsome hunk of beef, who happens to be a vegetarian, prides himself on keeping me well stocked in beef. He proudly declared I now have two hunks of beef.

Had a blast riding for almost six hours in fierce wind and intermittent rain all over downtown San Jose on Shirley, my rose gold beauty from @publicbikes. I brought her home six months ago (thank you @deangoatyman!) and she is as reliable and steadfast as she is beautiful but boy-oh-boy is she SLOW.

I would also like to introduce you to @myfriendizzy, David’s electric scooter. They’re not slow. Just perfect really, but they don’t have much long-term stamina. The second picture is Izzy and Shirley locked up together. A perfect fit.

David and I are committed to living car-free for as long as we possibly can. Although we are constrained in some ways, the freedom of not worrying about a car in our day-to-day lives liberates us in innumerable other ways.

We buy much less. We are targeted and thoughtful in our movements. We coordinate the needs in our household in a way that gives us a deeper sense of living, slowing down to just BE more.

Of course, it wouldn’t be possible to do all of this without living in a place like San Jose that is increasingly trying to fix the car-centric, inhumane way it was developed post WWII. The US leads the global north in deaths from traffic accidents.

Organizations like the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition are at the forefront of changing this. Folks like Bike Party San Jose inspire with amazing music and super fun rides.

The San Jose Bike clinic works tirelessly to make sure bicycle riding and repair is accessible to as many people as possible. Shirley recently threw a screw and they fixed her right up.

Events like Viva Calle SJ allow bikers, runners, walkers, skateboarders, and pets of all ages and persuasions time to be carefree on the streets in a way words can’t describe unless you, every day, put your life a little bit in the hands of the traffic gods on streets that aren’t made for humans not protected by 2000 plus pounds of plastic and metal.

I’d much rather take in the sights, get pushed around by the wind and swallow a bug here and there. I want to be present to all of life and feel completely alive. Me standing in an open grass field, with my rose gold Public bicycle I named, Shirley in front of me. She has two baskets, front and back. I’m wearing a white and rose gold bicycle helmet, sunglasses, and an aqua and purple abstract ensemble. Behind me is a very large blackish purple sign that reads, “2022: Bike to the Future: a glimpse of tomorrow.”

Our lemon tree has blossoms all over it and smells divine. If technologists were sensualists, they might have figured out how to transfer smell before sight and sound. Or maybe they’ve accidentally left aspects of beauty to be directly experienced and not transferable and that’s a good thing. Smell is by far my favorite sense. Green and yellow lemon tree leaves surrounding a small cluster of lavender and purple lemon tree buds just starting to blossom. One bud is just starting ti show it’s pistil and stamens. The tips (anther) on the stamens are yellow. The pistil stem (style) is a dark purple with a yellow tip (stigma). A very blue sky is peeking through the leaves in the background.

Fantastic way to spend a birthday. We’ve been blessed with such beautiful rain so far this year and the sunny and cool day today was perfection. The horses loved all the fresh grass. Happy New Year to All. Praying for blessings through these hard times. Thinking of all the people I love, holding space for you in my heart.

We played our first game of backgammon tonight and it came down to whoever rolled a 1 first. It was me of course! Here’s to many more evenings by the fire.

Open for trick or treaters. If you look closely you can see that someone photo bombed the second picture in the door window pane.
