🎨 SSG ALUMNI ARTIST FEATURE: SHARON SHAPIRO

We love seeing what artists from SSG’s exhibition history are doing now! Our latest SSG Alumni Artist Feature celebrates Sharon Shapiro (@sharonshapiroart) and her painting “Track Meet” (2025), currently on view in the Made in VA Biennial at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art (Virginia MOCA) through March 2027.

Since 1994, Made in VA has celebrated the extraordinary talent of artists living and working across the Commonwealth. Now presented in Virginia MOCA’s new purpose-built home, the juried biennial highlights the breadth and vitality of contemporary art being made in Virginia today.

In “Track Meet”, Shapiro explores strength, defiance, femininity, and the ways women are perceived. Three women gather on a football field dressed in deliberately hyper-feminine elements (platform boots, cat ears, and fur) but there is nothing delicate about their presence.

A flag, slingshot, and sword transform the scene into something that feels part rebellion, part ceremony. The figures are confident and commanding, taking up space rather than performing for the viewer. A dramatic shift from naturalistic tones to radiant pink further blurs the boundary between the familiar and fantastical.

As Shapiro describes it, the work considers the tension between the women’s feminine presentation and their “unapologetically formidable attitudes.”

“Track Meet” has also been exhibited in the 2025 New River Biennial at the Moss Arts Center in Blacksburg, Virginia, and ArtFields 2026 in Lake City, South Carolina.

👏 Congratulations, Sharon! We’re always thrilled to follow the accomplishments of artists who have been part of SSG’s history.

We’re thrilled to spotlight artist, Sharon Shapiro.

Sharon Shapiro is a Charlottesville, Virginia-based artist whose paintings explore the female experience through themes of fragility, agency, longing, and personal reckoning. Through expressive color, gesture, and psychologically charged environments, she creates layered compositions that examine the tension between societal expectation and private interiority.

Drawing from the cultural landscape of the American South, personal narrative, and contemporary life, Shapiro constructs emotional spaces where figures, objects, and landscapes become vessels for symbolic meaning. Her paintings explore opposing forces including imagination and reality, utopia and dystopia, and lightness and discomfort, reflecting the complexities of contemporary life.

Through painting, Shapiro investigates emotional excavation as an ongoing process. Her work invites viewers into intimate psychological landscapes, prompting questions about selfhood, desire, and the ways we navigate contradiction.

Rather than offering resolution, Shapiro’s paintings remain suspended in moments of emotional intensity, where vulnerability and transformation are actively unfolding.

Shapiro has exhibited at Spectrum Fine Art, SPRING/BREAK Art Show, Pollinator Art Space, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, Garvey|Simon Projects, Pen + Brush, and the Mint Museum, among others. Her work has been featured in New American Paintings, Whitewall, Art Spiel, and The Washington Post. Based in Charlottesville, VA, Shapiro was recently selected for the 2026–2027 Made in VA Biennial at Virginia MOCA.

We’re honored to have Sharon as part of the community.

Currently on view through June 30th is Linda Sok's "Deities in Temples X", 2024
Made with imagery drawn by family members, silk threads (printed then woven), and dye.

Sok was selected by acclaimed curator, Vai Jong Hunken of @aldayhunkengallery. Here is what he had to say (in part) about Sok's work:
"What draws me to her work is the way her materials carry a quiet sense of memory and honesty. Silk, salt, sand, and dye feel like subtle signs—traces that reconnect memory to territory, allowing histories to surface through touch rather than through fixed narratives."
(see slide 2 for full statement)

What a fun and joy-filled day celebrating some very special people from our SHE IS HOPE LA and SHE IS HOPE Realty family! 🎉💕

We celebrated birthdays for some of our amazing board members, their son’s 21st birthday, and another son’s high school graduation all in the same day — and what a beautiful time it was! 🥂🎓🎂

There was incredible food, wonderful company, lots of laughter, and memories made all around. These are the moments that remind us how important community, friendship, and celebrating life together truly are. 🤍

The afternoon ended with a fabulous sparkle party hosted by none other than the amazing Sharon Bishop Shapiro — and let’s be honest… every girl loves a little bling! ✨💎 It was such a fun experience and I cannot wait to receive my order… which of course included a little something special for the birthday girl, Wren. 😉

And yes… we just decided she’s 21 again because that’s what the balloons said! 🤪🎈

So grateful for the beautiful people in our lives and the chance to celebrate milestones big and small together. 💕

Terrific studio visit with Sharon Shapiro on our way through Charlottesville! A fantastic figurative painter who was in our Select show a few years back. We had the pleasure of giving her a solo show in Tribeca and have loved her work ever since! She is worth a follow @sharonshapiro.
