"Lake Manly" at Badwater Basin - Death Valley National Park

💦 Our Itinerary: Death Valley had been calling my name, ever since I visited a couple years ago. Once I learned about the lake, I knew I needed to seize the opportunity before it literally drained away. We arrived just in time for the sunset. The dried salt gave an appearance of a snow covered valley, while the lake provided a glassy mirror to reflect the beauty of the sky. I felt simultaneously ecstatic & peaceful.
🥾 Adventure Description: The hottest & driest place on earth turned into an aquatic wonderland, thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Hillary in August. The usual allure of Badwater Basin is the large field of salt, which forms interesting geometric patterns as far as the eyes can see. Now this easy, flat walk will guide you to a lake, only inches deep & refreshing to the touch -- an experience I'll never forget.
💡 Pro Tip: This adventure will be beautiful no matter what time of day, but I recommend sunrise or sunset. The shifting light created not only a beautiful sky, but ever changing images reflected onto the glassy smooth water. When I wasn't marveling at the reflections on the lake, I was gazing at the varied palette of colors on & behind the surrounding mountains. This was truly an immersive, 360° experience.

🌵 Our Adventure: Our epic desert weekend began with an off-road drive to the secluded Vista Malpais ("Badlands View" in Spanish). We set up camp & caught the sunset over the Badlands, before enjoying cooking & dining under the desert full moon & stars. We devoured the leftovers the next day, after our hike in Palm Wash, which features a natural bridge & large dry waterfall.

💡 Meal Inspiration: I have to thank my dear friend @shasepi for doing a great job preparing this vegan meal. It was not only delicious, but gave us a chance to talk, laugh & dance. It was simply magical to eat a restaurant level meal in such a beautiful place. You know how pasta is always better than next day? Well, you gotta try it the next day, in the middle of the desert, after a hike. Seriously yumz!

🍃 Red Curry Stew, featuring:

🍃 Persian Tahdig -- meaning "bottom of the pot" -- is a pan fried jasmine rice that is soft and buttery on the inside, yet crisp and golden brown underneath.

🌵 Our Adventure: We set up camp in a small rock nook within Coachwhip Canyon. This was the perfect campsite, giving us some protection from the desert wind & allowing us to see the brilliant moon rise over the top of the canyon wall -- lighting our surroundings like daytime, yet still allowing some stars to shine through. I can't imagine a more beautiful place to prepare this gourmet camp meal!

💡 Meal Inspiration: First and foremost, I have to thank my dear friend @shasepi for introducing me to Tahdig. It was not only delicious, but gave me a small window into the Persian culture. To add another cultural component, the stew recipe came from the book "Vegan & Easy", which was gifted to me by my friends from Germany ( @baunbeatrice ). The meal was not only delicious, but the experience felt soul enriching. Everything felt 💕 better together 💕

April 1st, 2023 - Elk Grove

On our way to a weekend in Sacramento, we decided to stop at a place I had long desired to mark off of the map, a national wildlife refuge for birds known as Stone Lakes. This place was the perfect reset after a long drive up highway 5, and the family enjoyed the paved trails and information on birds scattered about the park!

This place is a birders paradise, so if you are into it, consider this place perfect for you. We saw a good amount of birds, including my most infamous bird, the western meadowlark. We also got to enjoy seeing some of the mushrooms that were growing right out of the grass in the early spring. Nature was blooming after the rains of the winter!!

This was a short half a mile walk through nature, which made it perfect for the whole family to enjoy. Sometimes the short hikes can be the best ones, especially when spent with the people you care for and love the most‼️🥹🙏🏿
