It has been more than two months since I returned from ITI Academy Week, yet I have never quite managed to write a post about it.

I’m someone who takes a long time to digest things. It often takes some distance in time and space, the changing weather, the turning of the seasons, before I can put certain experiences into words. Summer has already passed, and now I finally feel able to share some of the thoughts and, of course, the gratitude that I have carried with me from this past summer.

I remember that, during one of our sharing sessions, we spoke about how a gathering like this could offer a pause from the lives we had come from. It was as if we had entered an elsewhere we could inhabit together. There, theatre unfolded into infinite possibilities, and through learning from one another, we found new creativity, courage, and faith.

Now I am back to the context I come from, readjusting to the weather and the rhythms here, and returning to busyness. Amid the constant circulation of everyday life, I keep thinking about something our dear Deepika @pikadee7 shared during her workshop: PLACE can be a form of fortune, and that such fortune can sometimes be inseparable from privilege.

The place where we met, shared, held one another, and allowed ourselves to be seen was not somewhere suspended outside reality. It was real. And yet, it also allow something to move beyond existing boundaries, and make room for us to build shared imaginations of the future and forms of solidarity.

So let me slowly carry this precious place we created together a little farther with me.

With this one body and this one voice of mine, I embrace you all across the different places of this world—places where we are seen and unseen, places of cruelty and fortune.

所以请容许我，缓慢地，带着这个和大家一起共同创造的地方，走得更远一些吧。

我和我仅有的身体，我和我仅有的声音，在世界各处，可见和不可见的，残酷或幸运的地方，拥抱着你们。

Two months ago, we gathered for the 3rd ITI Academy at THEATER DER WELT festival @theaterderwelt — bringing together 18 artists from across the world for a week of exchange. At a time of immense political pressure on our democracy and deep cuts to culture in Germany, being able to host such a gathering felt like a huge privilege.

Over the course of the week, participants immersed themselves fully in the festival atmosphere, the programme and the new connections. The encounters became starting points for conversations about their own practice, working methods and aesthetic understanding — about how they want to live and work together, and what it takes to create such spaces – agreeing as often as disagreeing along the way. The Academy reminded us: exchange isn’t about one answer, but about staying curious, listening closely and allowing different perspectives to live next to each other.

At the same time, we were painfully reminded that international exchange is still shaped by unequal access to mobility. Despite all efforts, our invited artist from Jordan was unable to join us because he could not obtain a visa to travel to Germany. His absence was a stark reminder of the barriers that continue to determine who gets to participate in international cultural exchange — and who does not.

Thank you again to everyone who made the Academy a space for collective learning, thinking and being. This conversation will definitely be continued 🌍

ITI-Academy Week has been going wonderfully, and we are extremely happy to have met so many inspiring artists and theatre makers along the way. The week has been filled with great contributions, including presentations by the fellows and workshops led by previous Academy and LAB Artists.
Starting the Week at ITI in our Media Library and at the @studio2_iti_berlin, we continued our journey in Chemnitz, where we connected with the independent art scene through the @freie_szene at @weltecho_, an independent art space. We joined a long table discussion with the curators of the @theaterderwelt festival, participated in the Deconfining conference @deconfining.eu “Bridging the Gaps. Connecting the Dots” together with the #ShapingCrossroad fellows and experienced the diverse programme of the @theaterderwelt festival itself.

I’m walking into the hotel when I hear a voice behind me.
“Hey, Ava.”
It’s Malin.
“Everything’s fine... except we’re missing Hamza.”
His visa didn’t come through.
And I’m reminded of all the friends who’ve missed shows, residencies, and opportunities simply because crossing a border isn’t equally possible for everyone. :)

I arrived at ITI Academy Week exhausted, just trying to make it through before finally going “HOME.”
But along the way, something shifted.
And each day, I found myself inspired by people’s stories, or even by ordinary conversations. thinking about these 18 people around me, each returning to their own home, trying to build community despite all the disappointment waiting outside.
And I realized something
• When you accept that the world isn’t okay, and that many of its biggest problems are beyond any one of us, you return to the human circle. to people. to community.
that’s the most powerful thing we can build perhaps

For what feels like the hundredth time this month, I’m packing my bag again.
This time it’s heavier, because of what I’m taking “HOME.”
I’m leaving with a fuller heart, ready to build, to care, and, when necessary, to dismantle.

Over two incredibly hot days in Chemnitz, the DECONFINING community came together one last time to conclude a four-year project that brought together an extraordinary wealth of people, knowledge, commitment, and creative energy to reimagine collaboration across Africa and Europe.
We are honoured to have hosted this final gathering and to have led this initiative over the past four years.
Thank you to everyone who made Bridging the Gaps. Connecting the Dots. such a meaningful conclusion.

Introducing the ITI Academy Participants #3

Sarah Almoneem @sarah_almoneem, Shauna Harris @shaunaxrose, Ting Huyan @eternityabercike and You-Taek Hwang @g983104 are further 4 of 12 international fellows that are invited to this year's ITI Academy Week in Berlin and Chemnitz and we are are delighted to be hosting and meeting them.

Sarah is a Syrian dancer, choreographer, and performer based in Beirut, Lebanon. Her practice moves between choreography and performance, exploring the body as a political and emotional archive. Through movement, she investigates questions of presence, memory, and belonging.

Shauna is an Irish-Jamaican actor, writer and creative facilitator based in Dublin, Ireland working across theatre, screen, youth and community spaces. Shauna has a particular interest in creative work that intersects with advocacy due to her background in social justice studies.

Born in 2000 and based in Chengdu and Beijing, Ting develops longterm socially engaged theatre projects with marginalized communities affected by structural educational inequality. From a feminist perspective, she understands theatre as a space for collective care and resistance, working with themes such as gendered labour and undervalued care work.

You-Taek is a creative director from the Republic of Korea. He explores new horizons of performance at the intersection of performing arts, technology, and cultural planning. Currently leading the multidisciplinary arts collective “THE STRANGER”, he continues his work on post-theatrical forms, technological convergence, and borders.
