We look back on a wonderful collaboration between two very different restaurants — VUUR and The Living Room at Summerhill.

What began as a shared passion for food and a desire to give sustainability a stronger voice soon became something much more meaningful — a friendship.

Different kitchens, different approaches, but a common respect for nature, the ingredients we work with and the responsibility we carry as chefs.

Beyond the food and the fire, it was about people coming together, sharing knowledge, exchanging ideas and building relationships that extend far beyond the kitchen.

Here’s a little sneak peek into our collaboration.

Over the coming week, we’ll be sharing a two-part video series capturing the people, the food and the stories behind this special experience.

We gingen naar Franschhoek en hadden het aller schattigste studio’tje daar! Echt een prachtige b&b van super lieve mensen. 🤍

In de avond gingen we lekker eten op de mooiste plaats. Waar je met zo’n 20 mensen lekker kon kletsen met lekker eten. De chef had de beste humor en top personeel! Echte aanrader hier! 🥩🤍

South African food is a rather broad category, and this one-off collaboration was a pretty spectacular reminder of why.

Chef Shaun Scrooby of VUUR joined Heirloom’s Wesli Jacobs at Cape Grace for a five-course celebration of our incredible produce, heritage recipes and the many ways we’ve learnt to cook them. From West Coast seafood to fire-cooked steak, every course brought a different part of our rainbow nation to the table.

Alongside the amazing food were some fantastic pairings of wine, unique cocktails and, of course, roosterkoek for Adrian. It’s time to accept I am third in his priorities after rugby and bread.

With four hands, two mouths and a one of a kind menu, we felt extremely proud to be South African (visa pending).

I really love easy dinners!!!! Places that you can eat, have a great cocktail and just enjoy the vibe.

Bao Down is one of those places. I love the flavours, small plates and easy eating.

And then … the cocktails.

Such a lekker vibe!!!

You have to try the Korean Chicken Bao and the Fish Dish!!!

What a night!

We were invited to experience a collaboration between Vuur’s Shaun Scrooby and Heirloom’s Wesli Jacobs at Cape Grace’s Heirloom restaurant last night.

Some highlights:
* Saldanha Bay oysters, cucumber gel and cider foam, with Alexander Vineyards Brut
* A rooster broodjie elevated with bone marrow butter, blatjang and house-made salami — proudly South African, done properly
* Yellowtail served stuck to the bottom of a sea shell, paired with Remhoogte’s Free to Be Riesling (we first fell for this one at Seebamboes)
* A citrus sorbet palate cleanser with an Avante VS cocktail — coke syrup stirred into the brandy, a proper nod to SA’s favourite mixer
* Dry-aged sirloin on the bone with morogo, and a glass of Remhoogte Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve
* And the dish that won the night: a deconstructed milk tart, cut with amarula bush coffee
The biggest surprise was at the end, when we were ushered past the Cape Grace’s beautiful pool, through the wine cellar and into the bar for one last brandy. Not a bad way to close out Heritage Weekend.

Love eating in Cape Town with its variety of amazing eateries. The Melting Pot is one of them. The shared small plates and rooftop for a few drinks - the best way to end an awesome day - just what the doctor ordered.

I’m Shaun, chef and owner of VUUR at Remhoogte Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.

I’ve spent most of my life working in the safari industry, about 20 years in total, before making the move into restaurants. I’ve always loved the way good food brings people together, whether that’s around a fire in the bush or sitting around a table with good food and wine.

These days, VUUR is where a lot of that comes together for me: food, fire, people and a real sense of place.

This weekend, I’ll be sharing a few of the places, food and experiences that I enjoy most about Cape Town.
