Photos by @shawnascamera // I want to hold on to this life so badly. There are tulips in my vase, and the stems I cut an hour ago are still on the kitchen counter. A few days ago I sat on my front lawn and saw an ant for the first time in months. It crawled over my towel, onto my plate, and ate the sugary remnants of my jelly donut. When summer sets in, I’ll get annoyed, but for now, I’ll let the ant eat. It’s spring.

Yesterday, I sat with Lucy in our living room. I pulled up the blinds behind our TV, and she’s thinking that there’s something different about the living room, but she won’t know what it is until I tell her the next morning. My music plays until the sun disappears over the fence, and when night sets in we get tipsy and play board games. Lucy is one of my favourite people in the world, and it’s mostly because she’s a ginger, but she prefers the term redhead.

My nails are grown out, and I’m starting to wear rings on my fingers, but I forget them most of the time. I broke one of my cameras in January and I feel the loss of it like a punch to my stomach. I know that’s stupid. I call my mom on Sundays and she calls me on her Mondays. She always asks me if I’m eating well and I always say yes, but really the answer should be no sometimes. I’m constantly touching my hair. I cut my bangs last summer and I’m still getting used to them.

I miss home but home is not the same as it was. When I think about it too much, I get an ache in my chest, so I try not to think about it at all. I texted my brother and told him about how much I miss the silence of our apartment when we would get home from school at the same time and sit on our couch in our uniforms. He is who I miss the most.

Photos by @shawnascamera // Canada had never been my first choice of country when it came to going to university. I had no friends or family there, I knew it would be freezing in the winter, and it just seemed so very far away. I grew up on the other side of the world: in Southeast Asia. My childhood was spent in the sweltering cityscapes of Bangkok, Manila and Kuala Lumpur. Our ideas of nature could be found in gardens and parks, bordered at the perimeter by skyscrapers, like some sentinel guarding the last vestiges of the old natural world. I loved the city; it was my home and all I had known for eighteen years. But it was time for a change.
