In the 1970s, an artist named Samuel J. Butcher launched a brand of soulful, teardrop-eyed-children to disseminate messages of Christian faith and values. Unintentionally, the now well known brand @preciousmomentsofficial became a staple in Black and Latinx communities who grew up with the figurines as part of their grandma’s living room decor or as decorative illustrations at children’s parties and baby showers. By the late 1990s, after decades of high demand, the brand reached peak sales estimated at $700 million before experiencing a sharp decline by the early 2000s.  TÍMIDAS presents “Momentos Preciosos,” a collection of pieces inspired by the Precious Moments brand but re-envisioned through a queer latinx cunty lens. Each of the featured looks are based on Precious Moments porcelain figurines launched at various seasons in the past three decades: the lovers on the way to the chapel; the best friends sipping on tea; and, the gardening sweetheart.  This production was made possible through the collaboration of San Antonio and Austin, Texas based artists. Shayla’s first tasting menu! ❤️ And it was vegan!! Huge shout out to the whole @magpiesanantonio crew for an amazing experience. The food, drink pairing, ambiance, and service were all 🤌🏼 The mushroom ragu was probably the best pasta I’ve ever had in my life. Shayla and I both agreed we would eat that once a week for the rest of our lives. Then the olive oil cake with coconut chantilly was a perfect ending. Thai corn fritter, eggplant tempura, and lacto cashew pate were all full of great flavors and textures, and the melon crudo was very light/soft but also full of flavor. As a pitmaster, veggies haven’t always been my strong suit, but seeing them cared for so thoughtfully is inspiring. We need more chefs willing to explore and push more vegan cuisine. Shayla and I always joke about how restaurants will have a “seasoned veggie” as their vegan option and it’s usually so bland and boring. Everything we had last night was the furthest thing from bland or boring. Thank y’all for the amazing night ❤️
