‘Paintings of’ marks a departure from my previous paintings, which were mostly based on found images. Working from my own photographs – some taken recently as a practice of being present, others having sat in my camera roll for years – changed my relationship to the source image. Rather than treating the photograph as something to reproduce faithfully, I approached it as something to translate. Scrolling through the thousands of photographs in my camera roll, I tried not to deliberate too much during the selection process, instead trusting my intuition and hoping the chosen images would reveal some kind of logic once the series was complete. Some of the qualities I found most interesting came directly from the peculiarities of cellphone photography (especially if the lens is cracked): flattened space, clipped highlights, strange colour balance, digital blur and awkward cropping. Rather than correcting these defects, I wanted to embrace them as part of the image's identity. There is a slight slippage in all the works, something always a little off. This is an inevitable part of the translation process.

It is important to me that the artworks are recognisably paintings, accepting the simplifications and distortions that occur as part of that process. Taking the photographs took a few seconds; choosing which ones to paint took a few minutes; painting them took hours and hours and hours. Painting slows down encounters that originally lasted only a few moments, allowing prolonged attention to be given to something that might otherwise have quite easily been forgotten. What made these images worthy of this amount of care and devotion?

Mediocre Man is out now everywhere. Cover art by talented genius @shayna_arvan 🤍

This song is about your bestie dating a mid guy and it’s draining the life force out of her. WE’VE ALL seen it happen. It’s a cautionary tale. Send it to a friend who’s considering dating a mediocre man.

$Directed entirely by a prismatic view of the word ‘surface’, season two of the journal held some remarkable doors into that idea. A fraction of them, here. 🖤 Thank you for the wild and beautiful engagement with this book, for the ‘wow’s’ and ‘but what is it?’s’ alike. Some of the last remaining copies are at Latitudes Art Fair this weekend, in JHB, with Duck Duck Goose / @goodgoodgoodstore !🪩 Season three is rearing its head. Keep an eye out for the open call. The best part of my year is almost here. Jess Xx$
