Recently, I had the honour and privilege of attending and speaking at the 30th anniversary of Sheena’s Place - an organization that has offered free, community-based support for individuals and families affected by eating disorders.

For three decades, Sheena’s Place has served as a place of refuge, support, and growth for those who needed it most. Hearing from current leaders, past visitors, and founders Trudy, Lynn, and Jane was a powerful reminder of the vision and courage it takes to save lives.

Last week, we celebrated 30 years of Sheena’s Place. 💙🤍🩵

Hearing founders Trudy, Lynn and Jane speak at our anniversary celebration was a reminder of what can happen when people see a need and decide to do something about it. The community in that room is part of what they started.

This work is personal to many of us and we know the importance of having these spaces of community. I’m proud to help carry their work forward in a small way as co-chair of the Board.

Thank you to the founders for starting something that continues to matter to so many people, and to Juanita and the entire team for bringing us together for such a wonderful evening.

If you’re able, please consider donating to help Sheena’s Place continue offering free support: www.sheenasplace.org

Happy 30th, Sheena’s Place 💙🤍🩵

If you’re worried that someone you care about may be struggling with an eating disorder, how do you actually start that conversation?

Minna Frederick, Program Manager at @sheenasplace, shares why focusing on changes in someone’s behaviour and well-being can be more helpful than commenting on their appearance. 💛

Our full conversation is now live on Culture Alchemy, as part of my new episode exploring Ariana Grande, body scrutiny, and the line between genuine concern and harmful speculation.

Isolation is a common and painful part of eating disorder recovery. When we don’t talk about what we’re going through, it can become even harder to reach out for the support we deserve.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re sharing people’s stories to remind our communities that none of us are alone in this. By speaking openly and standing together, we show others that they are worth of care, connection, and support.

Support and encouragement from the people around us can make an enormous difference in eating disorder recovery. Whether it comes from loved ones, peers, or thearpists, having someone who listens, believes you, and walks alongside you acn help make the journey feel less overwhelming.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we're sharing stories that highlight the impact of connection - the quiet check-ins, the steady encouragement, the professionals who offer guidance and understanding. Recovery is never meant to be done alone, and meaningful care includs the people who show up with compassion and consistency. Start Care Together.

In some environments, disordered eating thoughts and behaviours can become normalized. When harmful patterns are seen as “”just part of the culture””, it becomes harder to recognize when something isn’t truly serving us.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re sharing stories that remind us how powerful it can be to step outside these norms and seek support. Accessing counselling or speaking with a trained professional can help people untangle what’s truly supportive for them - and, open the door to a more compassionate, sustainable ways of caring for both our bodies and minds.

Eating disorders affect people of all genders, ages, races, ethnicities, body shapes, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic backgrounds. These illnesses don’t discriminate - but stigma and stereotypes often do, leaving many people unseen, unsupported, or misdiagnosed.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re challenging the narratives that erase so many lived experiences. When we broaden our understanding of who is affected, we open the door to earlier detection, better care, and a more inclusive path to recovery. Stop Stigma, Start Care.

Caregivers play a vital role in supporting loved ones through eating disorder recovery - offering stability, compassion, and advocacy during some of the most challenging moments. But caregiving can also be emotionally demanding, and many caregivers carry their own stress, fear, and exhaustion quietly.

This World Eating Disorders Action Day, we’re honouring the people who walk alongside loved ones while reminding them that their mental health matters too. Meaningful care includes support for caregivers: space to rest, connect, and seek help without guilt.

When caregivers are supported, whole families and communities are strengthened. Start Care Together.

There is a persistent myth that people don’t recover from eating disorders - that these illnesses are lifelong, or that hope is limited. The truth is that full recovery is possible. With early detection, compassionate support, and access to specialized care, people can and do health. Recovery isn’t linear and it doesn’t look the same for everyone, but it is real, and it is achieveable.
