I’ve always been in awe, but never really knew the story behind these women.

Today, it was an honor to bid adieu to R-Evolution and finally understand that @marcocochrane work has always been about something so simple and so powerful: SEEING WOMEN. SEEING US.

Thank you to @dejasolis, the powerful muse, for guiding us through such a beautiful, mindful moment together. In a heavy time, it felt really nice to feel connected and be reminded that we are better together. ❤️‍🩹

♀️The most female empowering sculpture of San Francisco will disappear from Embarcadero tomorrow..

R-Evolution @sheisart_iam inspired and motivated me every morning when going to the office.

Can this beautiful masterpiece by @marcocochrane please be gifted back to the city and @bigartloop ?

Some of my favorite photographs are happy accidents. 🌕

Last December, I went downtown to photograph the full moon with the @ferrybuilding in the frame. While I was moving around looking for compositions, I realized that from the right angle I could catch the moon shining through R-Evolution.

That wasn’t the photograph I had gone there to make.

Once I saw it, though, I couldn’t stop playing with the alignment, moving around Market Street as the moon appeared through different parts of the sculpture.

The discovery was an accident. The photographs after that weren’t.

Which makes today feel like the right time to finally share them.

After becoming part of the San Francisco waterfront for the past year and a half, R-Evolution is preparing to leave Embarcadero Plaza. Created by @marcocochrane, with Deja Solis as artist muse and collaborator, the monumental sculpture has been hard to miss, but what I’ve always loved about her is how peaceful she feels despite her enormous scale.

Tonight, Big Art Loop is hosting one last public celebration beneath her before dismantling begins October 12.

San Francisco changes constantly. Things arrive, become part of the landscape almost before you realize it, and then disappear again.

I’m glad I happened to be standing in the right place, on the right night, when the moon gave me a completely different way to see her.

Farewell, R-Evolution. ❤️

A Decade of Building on the Playa
I won’t be attending Burning Man this year, but as thousands of artists, builders, fabricators, engineers, and volunteers head onto the Playa, I’ve been looking back at a decade of projects and the extraordinary community that makes this work possible.

From 2015 to 2025, I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to some ambitious pieces of art:

2015 — I AM (formerly: R-EVOLUTION)
ARTIST: MARCO COCHRANE
CONTRIBUTION: KINETIC DESIGN
CURRENT LOCATION: SAN FRANCISCO, EMBARCADERO

2016 — DISC-GO-SPHERE
ARTIST: MATTHEW DAVIS
CONTRIBUTION: ARTIST, ENGINEERING & FABRICATION
CURRENT LOCATION: GROUNDS FOR ART, NJ

2018 — BIG POLLINATOR
ARTIST: JAKOB BOKULICH
CONTRIBUTION: ENGINEERING
CURRENT LOCATION: BURNED ON PLAYA, WHILE SPINNING

2019 — ELEKTRA
ARTIST: VARIOUS
CONTRIBUTION: MECHANICAL WING DESIGN
CURRENT LOCATION: BURNING MAN

2023 — EXQUISITE ANIMALUS
ARTIST: STEFAN SPINS & KJ BOHÈME
CONTRIBUTION: DESIGN & ENGINEERING

2025 — EYE TO THE SKY
ARTIST: MICHAEL WHITE
CONTRIBUTION: DOME ASSEMBLY LIFTING RIG

Building large scale art for the Playa is a unique education. It pushes you to experiment with materials, techniques, structures, mechanisms, fabrication, and problem solving and to figure it out under extreme conditions.

But the most meaningful part is the COMMUNITY. People bring different skills to the table, teach one another, solve impossible problems together, and put in extraordinary work to create something that belongs to everyone who experiences it.

It is some of the most challenging work I’ve done and some of the most rewarding.

I may not be on the Playa this year, but I’m not entirely sitting this one out. I’m “dusting off” the Disc-Go-Sphere and bringing it to a local art festival. In a small way, I’ll still be out there spinning in the dust.

To everyone building, welding, engineering, sewing, painting, cooking, hauling, organizing, documenting, and making the impossible happen this year: I’m thinking of you.

Here’s to a decade of big art, strange ideas, hard problems, and the people willing to build them together.
