What an honor to have SUBSTRATE included in @lacma’s new book “All Impossible Deeds: A Report on the LACMA Art+Technology Lab 2014-2025,” among so many projects and artists I admire, exquisitely designed by @davidkarwan.

Three years in the making, SUBSTRATE is a systems project including collaborative curation and cooperation between three civic “mother trees”: @lapubliclibrary, @lacma, and @lbcitycollege, and an interactive, co-built AR experience commissioned by @lacma and generously funded by @hyundai. Multiple key collaborators helped create this tentacular project, and I am so proud to have our collective work represented in these pages. I included an essay I wrote for LACMA’s UnFramed blog in this post for added context, and my gratitude to the following people is boundless:

SUBSTRATE’s advocate and steward @ferreejoel, to @lacma & @hyundai.artlab for supporting digital art, and to my fearless, brilliant team at @shakingearthdigital, with extra special thanks to the Substrate Part 1 crew: @cyanyellowmagenta, Casper Torres, Miguel Zavala-Lopez, @shereendreams, Mark Sosa, @tellyoutoday, @standardvision and @milosmo - your work remains an inspiration and integral to the project.

The blog post title is a phrase artist and abolitionist @jackie_sumell said to me as her New Orleans-based, mutual aid organization @freedomtogrownola reached out to help @laayudanetwork during the fires just over a year ago. I can’t think of a more fitting phrase to underscore how much we need each other in the face of all types of collapse.

omg I am so grateful for my friends who helped me bring my vision alive. Satellite is a product of mutual aid, and it’s incredible what we we create when we come together🖤

My biggest completed painting yet! I am so proud of her, truly <3 as per usual, this palette was hand mixed from primaries + black & white, a challenge I try to place on myself when I can only travel with so many objects to paint with. Specifically: yellow medium azo, ultramarine blue, alizarin crimson, mars black, and titanium white heavy bodied acrylics.

This piece saw 4 cities in 3 states, and it took a while for me to come back around to, to finally be completed after 8 months or so. I hope y’all find the same love for her that I have 🩵
