For the Quitters,

People have often made comments to me about how many jobs I’ve had, or something along the lines of, “let’s see how long THIS lasts.” And it always kicked me in the crotch of my feelings.

To be fair, I have quit many many things over the years; because it was too hard, I felt unqualified, too overwhelmed, you name it. Not great reasons. Embarrassing reasons.

But, there are also times I quit because I knew deep down that what I was doing or the situation I was in wasn’t right for me. That I was on the wrong path. I’d like to think I’ve gotten more discerning, and I know when my “quits” are for the right reasons.

There isn’t enough recognition for that kind of quitter. The one that follows the whisper of their heart when they hear the call. It requires risk, disappointing people and a lot of second guessing; relying on the belief that betting on yourself is a chance you’re willing to take.

Listen, I’m not saying everyone should run and out and quit their jobs or marriages or book clubs or whatever. There is value in commitment, but not if the trade is your soul and your only prize is endurance. So, when it comes to doing something that’s not aligned with who I am, to that I say “I quit.” And I hope you will, too. 🥂
