When @itsjessmcleod was sitting down to write @shesnonbinary, a short film that revolves around a conversation between Max (McLeod) and their boyfriend, Jake (Alexander Steele Zonjic), they did so in something of a rage. “It’s a personal story based on a breakup, and I wrote the first draft of the script a month after it happened, so I had little to no perspective about the whole thing,” McLeod says over a video call with the Straight. The film is about Max’s decision to get top surgery and the way in which Jake reacts to said decision, which might charitably be described as “mixed”. McLeod gained some perspective sitting in the editing bay. Read our full interview with the filmmaker-to-watch at the link in bio. SHE'S NONBINARY screens September 18 as part of @queerfilmfest.

Special Jury Award Winner: She’s Nonbinary The strength of the screenplay and the honesty of the performances were key in telling a complex story with humor and humanity, reminding us that behind questions of identity and labels are, above all, people. For its sharp writing, nuanced performances, and deeply human approach, the jury is proud to recognize She’s Nonbinary, directed by Jess McLeod.

FILM REVEAL 🧑‍⚕️💕😷 • Nonbinary Max and their straight, cis boyfriend, Jake, spiral into a cataclysmic identity crisis when Max reveals they’re off the waitlist for top surgery. Max, a nonbinary person, and Jake, their cisgender male partner with a tendency to misgender them, celebrate their first night living together. Max has another reason to celebrate - they’re finally off the waitlist for top surgery. But Jake isn’t excited by this news - he’s actually totally freaked out. At first, neither Max nor Jake are sure why he’s spiralling, but then Max realizes - it’s not about their tits. It’s about what their lack of tits means for Jake’s identity. • “She’s Nonbinary” comes to #SYSFF26 Aug 21-23 at the Assistance League Theatre in Hollywood. • • #shortfilm #filmfestival #filmswithaftertaste
