Part two:

We were lucky enough to have the talented poet Angela Drew join us. Participants enjoyed a spoken word performance and then learned about the power of the spoken word and how students can use this to tell their stories. Angela also led the students through an activity that taught them that what they think of themselves matters far more than what anyone else thinks about them. Students were left with great inspiration and motivation following this presentation.

This was also the first year that our Mental Wellness Summit offered a parent/guardian/caregiver session. Dra. Dulce Lopez presented to parents in both English and Spanish. Her presentation covered the Metamorfosis of the butterfly, which was used as a metaphor to describe the transformation people experience when they navigate the various areas in their life: work, school, and relationships with family and friends. The presentation's focus was to provide individuals with positive coping skills that can assist in their life journey towards their well-being practically and easily. We were so pleased to see parents join us in the conversation about mental wellness and hope this trend will continue!

We then wrapped up the day with a panel including three students from Patterson High School's NAMI. The three students shared their views on mental wellness– why it matters to them, how they tend to their mental wellness, and what resources they wish they knew about when they were younger. These three students did an excellent job setting an example for the open dialogue students should have regarding mental wellness. We commend these students for volunteering to be a part of our student panel and serve as role models for everyone in the room!

We would like to thank our excellent speakers, community resources, sponsors, and participants who joined us on Saturday! We truly value your time and hope to see you next year at our Fifth Annual Mental Wellness Summit. In the meantime, continue to invest in yourself and your mental wellness!

On Saturday, September 10, we hosted our Fourth Annual Mental Wellness Summit. This was our second year having the event in person, so we were extremely excited to see all of our participants together face-to-face!

Our keynote speaker, Isaiah Rivera, began the day with the statement, "It's Okay to Not Be Okay." Isaiah stressed the idea that every person is unique, and the way we may need to take care of ourselves reflects that. Isaiah led participants through a reflection of their current mental health and strategies to ensure a continuation of health and well-being in their lives and the lives of others around them. Isaiah's powerful words reassured all students who joined us that expressing an emotion such as sadness is just as important as expressing joy. Hearing a fellow student be so vulnerable about mental wellness and informed about the stigma surrounding it was undoubtedly insp[iring to the students listening in the audience.

Workshop presenter, Alyssa Najera, gave an informative presentation titled "Permission to Prioritize your Mental Wellness." She encouraged students to recognize that their thoughts, feelings, and needs are important. Alyssa provided a detailed overview of the basics of mental health of teenagers and young adults– educating all of our participants on things they may not have yet known. Alyssa's presentation encouraged all students to prioritize their mental wellness by educating them on common mental health challenges, where to find help, and ways to prioritize their mental wellness.

Our second workshop presenter, Monica Hernandez, had a presentation filled with vital Information and discussion about healthy and unhealthy relationships and how these relationships may be impacting our mental well-being. Monica discussed what relationships look like today, healthy versus unhealthy relationships, trusted adults, how relationships affect our mental health, and the importance of strong, healthy relationships. This presentation provided information that applied to all sorts of relationships in one's life, showing just how important it is to be aware of the relationships one partakes in.
