Bootcamp 2026

Last month we hosted our intensive 4 day bootcamp on Vancouver Island. This is an annual event we host to ensure when our firefighters go out on the line, they are ready to tackle all the tasks with professionalism, efficiency, and safety forward thinking.

We send our trainees through a specialized training program, allowing them to learn not only theory but practical skills in a controlled environment.

Well done to all that showed up and put in the work. This has been the best showing we have ever had. The calibre of recruits is extraordinary and we can grateful to have this pool to work with this year.

Kai Smart. A human who lived a thousand lifetimes. He was ferociously curious about the depths of the human experience; he wanted to know everyone and experience everything the world could offer. He was fascinated by every individual’s cumulative cultural, personal, or religious experiences that had shaped their disposition, as he absorbed any microcosm of perspective that could expand his worldview. In return, I watched him expand the lives of everyone he encountered. His presence in my life made the world feel impossibly small, the most unreasonable undertakings feel unreasonably easy. He was generous yet frugal, talented yet humble, limitlessly motivated yet peaceful at heart.

I first met Kai in 2022 on a ski tour at Joffre Peak, and went on to share the best moments of our lives. When my visa failed to materialize to join his Siberia trip this spring, I suggested a trip to Hokkaido on the way. He joined me in Myoko, where we shared our last pow day (slide 2). A few days later I got the news of Stratton’s accident at Joffre Peak. When I told Kai, we were both struck by the odd coincidence that we had met there. I decided to bail on the Hokkaido trip, and flew to Vancouver. The next morning I went to Joffre peak for the second time to say goodbye to Stratton. In a twist of fate I wasn’t with Kai during his accident on Hokkaido, because I had returned to our meeting place.

The second time I met Kai was at the airport in Qatar on the way to Kazakhstan. We missed our 2AM flight and spent 24 hours exploring Doha on zero sleep. We stayed up again the next night flying to Almaty, and landed at 5am. We were both so fired up, we decided to try to climb a crane and go everywhere in the city. We got caught poaching the city bus and bribed our way out of it. We both went 72 hours without sleeping, feeding off each other’s energy. I’ve never really gotten along with someone as well as I have with Kai. I was looking forward to a lifetime of adventures with him. I’m heartbroken, yet undyingly motivated to lead my life as a reflection of his light.

Kai lived with an intensity that will burn through me for the rest of my days. #LiveLikeKai

A tribute to Kai Smart ❤️

Kai was tagging Diamond Skiing in his edits for years before I ever met him - I used to get stoked when he would post a new edit, such incredible style.

I was lucky enough to meet Kai a couple years later and call him a friend. Spending many days together on the glacier @momentumcamps in Whistler with Kai and great groups of friends are memories I will always cherish.

Kai, your skiing and the way you lived life will continue to inspire.

Kai recently shared clips with me from him and friends new film ‘Tien Shan Dream’ (3rd slide). I have linked the movie in my bio.

Rest easy homie ❤️ #KSFOREVER

A team of international skiers embarks on a two-week glacier traverse connecting two remote research stations in Kazakhstan, in the new film 'Tien Shan Dream'🏔️

The high-altitude research stations are home to some of the longest-standing glacier and cosmic radiation experiments in the world - and are surrounded by deadly alpine terrain.
