Shield 2024-25

When I was young, no matter where I went, someone would always give me clothes to sleep in. Because of this, I have always understood pajamas to be something shared between people, something meant to be borrowed, and it became a habit of mine not to waste space packing them in any bag.
The custom of borrowing pajamas has become so natural to me that even in the 2 years I’ve been living out of a suitcase, I only have one pair. And only this one pair because recently my mom thought it time that the lady-woman-thing that I am should keep at least one set of pajamas with her at the ripe age of 27. But I keep those tucked away in my suitcase when I visit my brothers because they know about the custom of borrowing pajamas and they expect me to raid their closets for something cozy at night. Every time I visit Shield though, he beats me to it, leaving a folded stack of pjs out for me on the bed. Normally a t-shirt and a pair of boxers. It doesn’t matter if things fit right because I like being bundled in lots of fabric while I sleep. If I’m cold I’ll take out a pair of his sweatpants that are 6 sizes too big for me and pull the drawstring as tight as it can go until they’re sagging on me well enough. When I have sleepovers with Shield, he gives me his bed and he takes the couch. I think he likes offering up his bed to overnight crashers because couch-sleeping is nostalgic to him. Even sometimes when there is a bed for him to sleep in, he still chooses the couch. I wonder if the little boy in him is waiting on someone to pick him up and carry him to bed again. It’s been so long since anyone picked up that little boy. I imagine even big boys want to be carried sometimes, too. [Cont. in comments]

When we were young our dad would pray over us in tongues each night before bed. He would tell me to give my own prayer to god, and so while he’d speak in a language I could always understand without ever knowing words for, I’d watch him with my eyes wide and pray, “Please, please god. Just let me be taller than my brothers.”
My height over them did not last long, so at the start of my double digits, as our dad continued his nightly holyspeak, my prayer transformed into, “Fine. If I can’t be taller than my brothers, then let me be cooler than them.”
Maybe god’s humoring me or maybe my will is wild but I can smirk in my brothers’ direction to that already answered prayer. It’s important to me to continue to be my own answer to that prayer, out of love for myself, and for them too. Because when they read this they will recognize this provocation each accept my challenge. Are you going to let me be cooler than you? What are you going to do about it? We were raised to be very competitive children, you see.
A year ago I was in Sri Lanka contentedly eavesdropping as a dorky group of bird watchers listed all the group names for gatherings of different birds. A charm of finches, a murder of crows, a wake of vultures. I smiled as I wondered to myself what we would be called, as a group of siblings. If Suede is rowdy and Slayte is righteous, Shield is ravenous and I am riskier than them all. “We’d be a Riot,” I thought in a Ceylon jungle.
