🚨 JUST DROPPED: AFTER THE FINAL WHISTLE | JR Butler
What happens when the sport that has defined you your entire life comes to an end?
JR Butler grew up in a competitive hockey family in Massachusetts. His father was a Hall of Fame hockey coach, and both of his younger brothers played college hockey. At College of the Holy Cross, JR was part of the team that pulled off a historic NCAA tournament upset over top-seeded Minnesota.
Almost nobody expected Holy Cross to win—except the players in their locker room.
But JR’s hardest challenge came after his final game. At 23, he lost the structure, teammates, and sense of purpose that hockey had given him. In this episode, he speaks openly about that grief and how his struggles led to alcohol and drug use.
JR went on to build a successful career in tech sales. He saw how the resilience, coachability, discipline, and team-first mindset athletes develop could carry them into the workplace. He also saw how easily employers could overlook those strengths on a résumé.
That experience led him to found Shift Group, which helps former athletes and veterans transition into new careers. JR says the company has helped place more than 3,000 athletes with employers.
He shares the guidance he wishes someone had given him when hockey ended: get clear on the life you want, understand your strengths, and build a new playbook to get there.
We talk about the Minnesota upset, identity loss after sports, JR’s journey into business, and why he wants athletes and veterans to know their best years can still be ahead of them.

🎙️ The first episode is officially in the books.

Had an awesome time sitting down with JR Butler for the very first taping of The Professor of Sales Podcast.

What started as a conversation about sales turned into something much bigger - faith, family, kids, technology, hockey, upbringing, life experiences, and curiosity.

That’s what this podcast is about.
Interesting people. Real conversations.
And letting curiosity spiderweb the discussion into places you never expected.

Because the best conversations aren’t forced.
They evolve naturally.

Huge thank you to JR for the time, energy, and authenticity.

For a lot of us, one of the hardest parts of being an athlete is not just when the game ends. It’s figuring out who you are without it.

When your sport has shaped your routine, identity, community, and confidence for years, that transition can feel disorienting. It can bring questions and uncertainty that a lot of athletes are not fully prepared for.

That’s why this conversation matters. Through our partnership with Shift Group, we’re committed to helping athletes navigate that transition with more clarity, confidence, and support.

You have 100 problems. Until you lose your health.
Then you only have one.

Autoimmune disease doesn’t just affect your body.
It tests your identity. Your energy. Your resilience.

This Autoimmune Awareness Month, we’re not staying quiet.
We’re naming it. Sharing it. Standing in it.

Awareness matters.
But community changes everything.
