The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel is a small, nocturnal forest-dweller found in Japan, spending much of the day hidden away before becoming active after dark.

Despite the name, it does not truly fly. A membrane of skin between its limbs allows it to glide between trees, helping it move through the forest canopy while avoiding the ground.

Because these animals are nocturnal and sensitive to disturbance, photographing them responsibly requires patience, low-light equipment and, most importantly, no artificial light directed at them.

Here, tiny lives are quietly breathing. Please do not disturb their habitat or share their exact locations on social media. This is not a tourist attraction, it is their home. Let us all raise our awareness and work together to protect these little ones.

Known in Japan as the Ezo momonga, this Siberian flying squirrel stayed close to a tree hole before launching itself off the trunk.

These squirrels have huge dark eyes that help them see at night, when they do most of their foraging. During the day, they usually shelter inside tree cavities, including ones carved out by woodpeckers.

When they leave, a furred membrane stretched between their front and back legs spreads out like a sail, letting them glide from tree to tree without coming down to the ground.

If you ever come across a nest like this one, please give it space, avoid startling the squirrels, and keep its exact location off social media.

Siberian chipmunks can be found in Hokkaido, Japan, where they spend much of their time gathering seeds and nuts before winter. In the last slide, one grooms itself by licking its paw and rubbing it across its cheek.

Also known as the common chipmunk, this species is native to northern Asia and northern Japan, including Hokkaido. It is the only chipmunk species found outside North America.
